The best way to gain maore space is to purchase a second hard drive. They are pretty easy to install.

continuing from jackie's post:
the cheapest best way would be to use discretion and delete stuff that you dont want, esp video and audio files which occupy a lot of space.
Taking the avg size of a song in mp3 format as 4 MB, and size of a 5 page word document as maximum 100 kb, the song occupies 40 times the size of a word file.

However software (programs) need to be "removed" (uninstalled) from the control panel's add/remove programs.

To increase the efficieny of your disk, defrag it and let some free space be.

start with your temp files then the safest way to gain space is to use uninstall for the programs or go to add remove programs

also if you have componants in windows setup you can uncheck things you don't need that were installed automaticly when windows was installed

defrag does not gain space it organizes the data that is already written making access to your files faster

you can also go to start programs accessories system tools disk cleanup and run that

i do not suggest just deleting files from your hard drive i have done this and messed up .dll files causing registry problems

if you do not feel comfortable doing any of these things then use a third party software
such as system mechanic or norton utility's

To delete some temporary files that aren't needed: right click on your hard drive, select properties, then click disk cleanup.

If one reads by post (response #3) with some care, it must be apparent that I did not suggest random deleting of files.

Removing windows componets will not give you more than 20 MB or so free. Deleting temp files, yes...depending on what created the files reasonable space could be recovered. But deleting temp files may not always be safe. Certainly not safer than deleting space hogging video files.

Which would be easier?
Deleting a single video of 50 MB with no risk, (if there is a backup or something the user is not very particular about) or deleting temp files (with some risk thrown in) and removing windows componets et al only to gain ~25 MB?

i think Kailas is erring on the safe side, which is good. also do a search on the drive for files with extnsions such as .bak .gid or other temp files that have a ~ (tilda) in them as they are not really files you need to save. other temp files may be important to keep untill your software that you installed needs to access them. so beware as Kailas notes. any programs you no longer use or want could be un-installed ( not just deleted ) if it has an un-installer file that works. unfortanitley this is not always the case and third party software to help you un-install it may be the best way to go.
look around before you start willy - nilly.

cheers, Bill2

bill2, chrisman.7,

no probs, absolutely no hard feeling at all. (was honestly wondering if something was out of place in my post as it seemed pretty straight forward to me) If anything else we are a lil closer now on the forum :)
