Clean re-install and ME dfrag

About 2 weeks ago I did a clean re-install of Win 98SE. I have not re-installed most of the software bundle that Gateway shipped with the PC, and use the computer mostly on the internet. 13 gig HD (about 800 mb used). I re-installed ME dfrag, and for some reason it seems to run as slow as 98 defrag. (Always run in safe mode following scandisk). 98 defrag is renamed "old" so I don't see how it could be running. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks for any suggestions or advice.

Start by Identifying the version. Rt clk on it, select properties` then the version tab. It should be 4.90.0.3000 well?

Try it in normal mode. I have seen reports that it seems to run as slow as the Win98 one when run in safe mode.

I've found that ME defag isn't much faster than the 98 variety for me but some seem to swear by it.
It's worth understanding just why defrag takes so long and it's because Windows is trying to be intelligent (now there's an oxymoron if I ever heard one..!) by arranging executables and certain other files near the start of the drive for quicker access.
You can modify this behaviour be running defrag from the Start/Run dialogue box instead of the usual right click/Properties on the drive.
When you do it this way you get a settings option where you can tell Defrag whether to do this or not.
