During a clean install of W98SE, I received the following message after I entered setup at the A prompt: "Windows setup requires largest executable program size to be at least 442368 bytes to run!" What does this mean and how do I deal with it? Thanx

Ut means you probably need at least these two lines in config.sys:
device = himem.sys
dos = high, umb

If at first you don't succeed, you're about average.M2Go

"... you probably need at least these two lines in config.sys:
device = himem.sys
dos = high, umb"As you stated that you're at the A:\> prompt, the above mentioned files need to be on the startup floppy. Are you using a "Win98 Startup Disk"?
If not, go here, or here, or here, or here to obtain one.

How/where do I install these two lines in config.sys? Remember, I don't even have an operating system!

Using Dan's recommended Win98 boot disk, boot it and type in:
edit a:\config.sysYou will see the proper lines in that boot disk.

The boot disk Dan Penny recommends in response 3 is a program for making a
floppy boot disk.Don't just copy it to a floppy disk.Use the file to make a windows 98 boot disk.Excuse me Dan not taking from your solution
just advice to Geno.

I should have added that info. Thanks for providing it. I sometimes forget that some people don't realize it's an image for making the bootdisk, and not a full disk for download. I have the following saved to a text file for inclusion, but it got by me this time;
The above bootdisk image file is a self extracting file and has to be executed (run) from a running Windows machine in order to create the actual startup diskette.
When you boot a machine with a boot floppy, it usually creates a RAMDRIVE in system memory to contain DOS system tools. Thus it will move your "normal" CDROM device/drive letter "up" one level. (If your CDROM is normally E:, it will be F: when booting with this bootdisk.)
The path to the found CDROM will be set with the bootfiles however, so entering A:\>f:\setup is the same as entering A:\>setup at the A:\> prompt. There is no need to include the cdrom drive letter.
The CDROM device letter will be assigned near the end of the floppy boot process, right after MSCDEX is loaded.
