My computer seemed to be working fine until about 3 weeks ago. Now 90% of the time I try to start my computer, I get that black screen with the blinking red/green/blue dialogue box, saying something like "Monitor is fine / Check video cable or PC". When this happens, the "power" button on the computer tower won't turn off when I initially press it: I have to click off the power strip to turn the power off. Once every couple of days, though, when I turn the power strip on and hit the power button on the tower, the computer starts up like normal, going to the blue "checking for errors" screen and then back to normal. I can then use my computer like normal for a while - but often my time on the computer stops when it freezes, and again, the power button on the tower doesn't seem to respond. It's then back to the same frustrating blue/red/green blinking box. OK, my question then, is: Is this simply a problem of old cords, computer hardware, or computer power (my computer is 4 years old), or is this something I could fix if and when I do get the next chance to operate the computer. If it's any help, this problem seemed to start around the time an error box saying "Cannot import C:\Windows\sp.reg: Error opening the file. There may be a disk or file system error" started appearing - I don't know if they're related. (I studied the "sp.reg" error in another discussion on this board). Any help on this subject would be greatly appreciated - I've grown quite attached to my computer and I want to save it!! Thank you! |
