Changing video modes w/out Windows

Halfway out of curiosity, halfway because it would make my life easier...I have an install of Win98 that is set to start up in 800 x 600 on default login (no usernames). Unfortunately the motherboard's on-board video chip is old and does not support anything greater than standard VGA, and cannot be turned off. Is there a way to change the Windows display settings from DOS mode? Every time I attempt to start the Windows GUI, I get a blank screen (sounds and everything else work, I just have no video, so I'm flying blind). I know I could just put the hard drive in another more capable system and change the settings from there, but if there's a way to do it from DOS mode, I'd like to know just for my information.

Safe mode will boot to 640 x 480. Start the computer. Before the OS starts to load start tapping the F8 key. A boot menu should come up. Choose safe mode. Then adjust the resolution to 640 x 480. It will respond with a message that this change will take affect on your next normal boot--which is what you want.
