so when I reset my CMOS settings and everything is up ans running again, going back to my original problem, which was AFTER I had reformatted the drives. I ran win 98 on it and it would only boot in 16 color depth. This would not change to 256 color depth. As I purchesed the pc from someone else---I know it was upgraded and what it is capable of---but I have no idea what to set the setting s to to take advantage of 256 color depth. Could not decide on what to point the settings to to find better drivers. Can anyone tell me if there is a way around this? I wiped everything when I reformatted. But there must be a way. Looking inside the pc to decided what is being used and what it is capable of where color depth is concerned, will I get any clues that way to help e when I configure the CMOS settings and the settings in properties, later? Some programmes would not open in 16 color depth and required 256 so I was getting error messages.
Thanks

If someone could tell me how to alter the switches on the jumpers also---I would be truly grateful!

16 colors is the default vga windows driver. To get higher resolution you will need to install the correct driver for you video card. Since you reformated the drive, the drivers that were there obviously were deleted. You will need to download them, and to do so you will need to identify your video card.

This is a bit more than you asked for, but others may benefit from it:

Subject: Display

The following may indicate what type of Display Driver you have:
Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Information>(+)Components>Display

Be patient and eventually it may show the model of the Display Adaptor plus much other info you may not want or understand.

Go to the manufacturer's site and download the latest drivers. Or go to:

Driver Forum

You should be able to get it there. Bear in mind that you will still be limited by the Monitor hardware (picture tube) and the display adaptor (Video board). If you cannot do better with the latest available video driver, you will have to spend some money.

To inspect/modify yout display properties, go to:

Start>Settings>Control Panel>Display>Settings

Note 'Screen Area' and 'Colors'
If you can change the settings in "Colors' and 'Screen Area', you are in business. If not, you will need to obtain a newer monitor and/or Display adaptor and latest Video Driver.

as I bought the pc second hand I am not sure how to identify the video card---I have the pc cover off and can see all the cards installed though.
There are:

ATX Form Card

Telepermit

Would it be the atx card?

Thanks for the help. Think I can manage those.
