I'm trying to remember if there was such a thing. What would you be upgrading from, Win3.11? If you are running DOS, I believe you can install the Win95A full from there.

I've got a 13-disk set of floppy disks that will upgrade to 95 from 3.1. I've also got a burned cd that's supposed to be 95 upgrade but I haven't tried it. If you're interested in either one I can make a copy and send it to you.

Maybe that'll end the saga.

I guess I can send them one at a time via email. I have software that makes a self extracting image of the disk. When you get the file, run it and it will recreate the disk.

I don't know about converting the disks to a cd. I've never tried it. If it doesn't work I can mail you a copy of the upgrade cd.

OK, I've got a bit of a problem. The disks are DMF (1.68 meg) formatted. Although I can image them, in order to extract them you'd need to be able to format a floppy disk to 1.68 meg. I've been fiddling around with some software that's supposed to do that but can't get it to work--at least in a windows environment.

So since you plan on burning the files to a cd anyway, I'll just zip each disk and send it that way.

Can't WinImage create DMF?

He/she seems to be running DOS (on the one machine anyways) there's maxidisk

Ah, dunno - forgive my pessimism - supposedly they already have Win95A full.

Good luck, hope it all works out.

I downloaded something called 'fdformat' which should have been able to do it. I tried running it from a dos box but it wouldn't work. Maybe it needs to run from pure dos. It's file dates were in 1991 so that may be it.

Anyway I zipped all the files and just got done sending them.

The disks were still in their shrink wrapped package and didn't have a product key so maybe one is not needed. But if so, post back and I'll see if I can scrounge one up.

Also, the disks were from compaq, but I don't think you'll have a problem installing them on a different machine.

Yeah, fdformat, 'free format', maxidisk etc - they work fine in Real DOS (all about the same, iirc)

I've got a similar DMF set from M$ - didn't need the product key to install, but it was a used set.

tune in tomorrow...

when I run setup from my burnt CD, it gives me this message:

Setup can't read the setup disk.
please make sure that the disk
is in the drive and the drive
door is closed.

I can't figure out why this message keeps
comming up. I have a packard bell platinum 2240 with a pentium 200MHZ w/MMX tech. It has
32 MB RAM. I am running Windows Setup from Windows 3.1 with no Win32s. Setup goes through saving the DOS/Win 3.1 files, but when I get to selecting whatkindofinstallation I want and click <Next>, It gives me that message.

Hey dodger

Ok, well, it seems like either your CD drive could be dirty or the 'burnt' copy of the Win95 installation CD contains errors - I believe I've heard that sometimes copied disks can be problematic.

You don't need the Win32 extension, and your system specs are well above the minimum required.

Might be better off if you can use the floppy disk version that DAVE had forwarded to you last week.

That's the version that I originally installed (on my 486) - it can be patched to 'A' - you may need to hunt a bit for all your drivers, not a huge amount on the floppies but possibly those on the CD are useable.

I'm sure DAVE will be popping in soon, maybe he has some ideas.

Yeah, sometimes burning at a lower speed helps. Or it could be the cdrom is going bad. Are you using the files I sent and then burning them to a cd or is this a different cd?

If it's the files I sent I wonder if maybe burning the floppy versions to a cd has some built in problems.

Yes they are the files you sent me. I tried to put them on 13 floppy disks, but I got the same problem. I have erased my CD before recording your files, if that will help. My CD-ROM drive in my Packard is running fine. I've tested it.

To copy them to floppy disks you'd need to format them as 1.68 and not 1.44. If you could do that then installing it that way should work OK.

You might want to try making a win95 directory drive on the hard drive and copying the files there. Then attempt to run the setup from c:\win95.

Other than that it might be the files are set up such that they must be run from floppy disks and not elsewhere.

I do have the upgrade cd that probably would work. Email me your address if you want to try it. In the mean time I'll test it to make sure it works OK.

I used the upgrade cd to upgrade a drive from 3.1 to 95 and it worked fine. So let me know.
