cell phone as modem

May 7, 2005 at 09:27:05
Specs: WIN 98SE, AMD 256

I have a Nokia 3585i cell phone that I have been using as a modem with my desk top (hp running XP) works good. Now trying to set it up with older lap top (NEC 98SE). Keep getting disconnecting error 678. Remote computer not answering. Have checked modem and puter says all is ok, shows on phone screen that it is dialing. As soon as it starts to dial, it disconnects with the above error. Since it works with the other computer I am inclined to think it is something with my 98 system. Any one have a solution? Thanks for any help.

You may need additional sotware in Win98. Isn't using the cell phone as a modem on a desktop kind of expensive to use?

Try installing dialup networking upgrade version 1.4 from M$.

I use the cell phone after 9:00 at nite and on weekends when we have free minutes, this is when we are in our motorhome (about 5 months a year) beats going to a library or some other outside source to do e-mail and search on the net.

Hi Vicks, OtheHill, Dave01, hello everyone,

Vicks,

Who is your cell phone provider?

I use Sprint and connect my cell to a laptop via the USB port using Snap Dialer. Snap Dialer software will dial out on #777. It also doesn't charge any minutes to my phone regarless of the time of day.

Best Regards,
Mesich

We use Alltel as our cell phone provider. We
live in SE Ne (very small community and no other choice for now).
Where did you get the software for the snap dialer? I get the same error message whether I dial direct to our ISP or thru the qnc #777 with alltel. Have talked to Alltel wireless techs, and Nokia and the ISP and everone is stymied. Don't know what else to do. Like I mentioned above, this works great with the other computer so I think it must be something to do with Win 98SE.
Thanks guys for the input tho.

I down loaded and installed the DUN1.4 update as suggested by Dave01 but nothing has changed. Any other suggestions?
I REALLY APPRECIATE you help.
