I plan to purchase a CD-RW drive in the very
near future and don't know whether I need a
parallel or USB type. How do I find out
which one I need? I have a Compaq PC with
Windows 95. I have an available bay, but I
may choose to purchase an external

If you have an exturnal usb port you can use that with an exturnal cd\wr and a terminator if needed.

To my best experience, either go for SCSI or IDE where the speed of data cable are high (EDE you can get about 10MB/s with DMA-UATA66) and SCSI you will probably get 40MB/s depends on the control card you buy. DONT get USB or EXTERNAL. When burning the CD, the data transfer rate is extremely important. Get SONY CD-R (eith 8x or 4x) as I am using them and they are liable and fast.

Should get hold of Adaptec "CD Creator 4.0" as it's the best CD writer for windows that I've seen.

Get a SCSI, nothing compates IMHO. And if you can afford it, buy a Plextor CD Burner.

Go with SCSI ...most computers now support SCSI....so you can take it to a buds house that has dsl ora cable connection...whatever you do dont go parallel you will be able to run a 500 mile marathon before it completes burning a CD...as for software "NERO" and "CDR WIN" are the best...NERO is better but cdr win can be just as good if you know what your doing..
ADaptec CD Creator 4.0 gets a huge thumbs down for burning cds....but it makes great coasters for your drinks!haha

What version of win95? a or b...
A does not support usb although some computers were shiped with usb dives and win95a, and i wouldnt put compaq past that....i prefer scsi....ide a good alternative, but if you are going external, parallel and usb are usually the same speed. So....you might just want to upgrade to Win98se, pop in a firewire card and buy a firewire burner....fast....

Here is the straight scoop from a guy who knows what he is talking about. Forget the external stuff. USB too slow and unreliable. Also too expensive. Have you priced a SCUSI card lately? Buy an HP 8X internal unit. If you do not know how to install it, pay someone to do it for you. You will be very happy with it.

Got a few bucks left over? Replace your CD ROM drive with a Plextor. The DAE rate is very high on these drives which is important. No buffer under runs. Burn direct from CD ROM drive to CD writer without writing to hard drive first.

Not that half you guys ever listern anyway. I got a Iomega ZIP650 Internal EIDE 4x4x24 with bundled Adaptec CD Creator 3x It works just fine. Its the speed of the Write/Rewrite that is important here. Mine is 4x But I would like to upgrade to 8x or 16x (Most cheep disks now go upto 8x)

It all depends on how oftern you use it. I make system backups and a few 'copies' a week and my setup does me fine.

Everyone has thier own faverate!
