Until 2 days ago,everything worked just fine and then I started playing with cd burning programs other than my regular one. All have since been removed but I can no longer get sound from .cda encoded disks. Winamp will still play MP3 encoded discs just fine but with .cda files, it will identify the album and tracks and start playing but no sound. This goes for cd's I have burned and used in my car, so I know they work, as well as store bought audio cd's.
Did one of the applications I removed take something with it or make changes to my machine.
Thanks,
Dave

Possibly, some program you un-installed removed some shared file which is needed for playing .cda files. Try re-installing Winamp.

G'day Dave, check in the Registry for these three keys, these are the default command for CD Audio files
Hkey_Classes_Root
+ .cda -> "cdafile"+ cdafile -> "CD Audio Track'
.+ shell
..+ play -> "&Play"
...+ command -> "C:\WINDOWS\cdplayer.exe -play %1"+ Audio CD -> "AudioCD"
.+ shell -> "play"
..+ play -> "&Play"
...+ command -> "C:\WINDOWS\cdplayer.exe /play %1"Perhaps one of these programs changed the default command to their program instead, you can change it back.

This may seem like a simple answer and I don't mean to insult your intelligence, but have you checked the Windows mixer panel to see if the volume for the CD is turned down?

Ronnie,
Can I start refering to you as
Ronnie Registry. :)
I do mean this with respect!Such a vast amount of knowledge I have noticed in this area from you for quit some time now
Take Care,
Good Day!
Mesich

I tend to go with Roger. If it seems to be playing but there is no sound, it would seem to be a mixer problem.

G'day Mesich, without trying to hijack someone else's post [again], I've been in'n'out of the Registry long before I ever seen the internet to find out more [not much more I might add]. I even bought a book once about it 5 years ago, must read it one day!
It's not the Big Bad Bogie Man that some folks think it is, I even work in there 'without a net' daily. The Registry and Resource Editing are my two favorite hobbies, and Icons as well. And R.E.G. are my given name intials as well. Maybe Reggie Ratt?
And what happened to Dave's Cd player? come on down Dave and tell us all.

Mesich, Ronnie... enjoyed your repartee... thanks...Have taken interest in your posts. Mesich is the "cautious" one (as advisor), RR is the "brave" one... I appreciate you both for your integrity and willingness to help.
Newbies (and others) are fortunate in having you two... I, for one, appreciate what you do. Thanks, Mesich; thanks Ronnie.

Dvae Petrie,
Try this...(if I understand your prob correctly)...
Go to Control Panel>Multimedia>CD Music tab.
Make sure "Enable digital CD audio for this CD-ROM device" IS checked.Along with suggestion from Ronnie above (about the reg tweaks) this should re-enable your "default" cdplayer.exe.
Let us know,
bulloney

Thanks for the tips folks. So far I have re-tuned the registry-no joy- but the "enable digital audio" box in the multimedia control panel is grayed out. Mixer appears to be fine and the volume is up.
Still searching.
Thanks,
Dave
