cd-rw blank cd system freeze

I just bought a Pacific Digital 32x12x48x cd-rw. I think I installed the hardware fine, but I am having problems with my system freezing when I try to format blank cds’. My system even freezes after I insert just the blank cds’ when the computer tries to read them. I have tried using the blank cds that came with the cd-rw as well as ones from a TDK 50 pack I bought. I have tried closing all running programs from the startup menu and quick launch menus as well. I run Windows 98sec, Dell 600 mhz, cable high speed internet. Did I hook the hardware up wrong or something, any ideas??
Have you tried inserting the dik after you have opened up your CD writing program? Because that sometimes bypasses the system trying to read a blank disk.
Otherwise .. it may sound dumb, but have you made sure that the system is picking up the fact that it a CDRW not a CDROM?

I didn't realize that you have to format blank CDs. On the freezing, have you tried shutting off all programs that are running before you start the burning software?

Sorry for the first post. I didn't remember that you said you had shut off other programs. Is your burner on an ide connection as a master or single? Sometimes they can be quirky about being slaved.
