Cdroms/ MS dos compatibility mode

Comment:
Everything was fine until yesterday. Computer has been running OK for 18 months. Now in Windows, the CDROM and CD burner are not recognised but work OK in DOS. Not recognised in Control Panel/System. Neither are my Hard disk contollers there anymore. I am running in MS DOS compatibility mode.
Checked registry ... no sign of NOIDE or BAD_IDE. No viruses. I am not running an Autoexec.bat or Config.sys. I never have.
Nothing yellow flagged in registry.
Ran in safe mode. The CDROM and burner were recognised. I removed them hoping that on a reboot they would be detected in Windows. They were not recognised. Windows detect hardware does not find them either.
How can I resolve this problem without a reformat please? Any suggestions? Thanks in advance. Is this to do with 32 bit drivers?

Try reinstalling the chipset drivers for your motherboard to reinstate the hard disk controllers.

go into msconfig, (start -> run -> type in 'msconfig' no quotes and click Ok) click on the 'Advanced' button and in the window that appears check to see if 'Force Compatiblity mode disk access' is checked, if it is uncheck it and click on 'Ok' and on Ok at the main msconfig window and reboot (you'll probably be prompted to reboot) You should then be good to go.

Exit to dos and at the prompt type:
scanreg/restore
and return. Choose a registry to restore with a date that precedes the problem. Then reboot. Any software you installed after that date will need to be reinstalled.
