Well, I'm having the same problem with my
notebook computer and Windows 95.
The manufacturer (Hitachi) maintains a site
with the supposed drivers for my CdRom but
the commands required initialize the drivers
are not easy and I'm getting various error messages on booting the computer.
It is really frustrating to not know how to
configure the CdRom device drivers but I have
learned alot in trying to configure them.
I have contacted the MicroSoft web site and
downloaded other Windows 95 update files but
they do not help me with my CdRom.
The notebook configurations are very mysterious, but there are usually little text
files with names like "_Read8x.txt" or "_Read10x.txt" that tell how to configure
special drivers with names like "TEAC_CDI.SYS" or "CdRomDrv.SYS" by placing
special lines and "/flags" or "Option" within
the Autoexec.bat file and the Config.sys files. Anyway, I'm still about as lost as you are but the computer is working better
than ever except for the CdRom drive.

I hope this helps,
Keep Searching the Web,
I'm sure we'll find the answer somewhere.

If all else fails I'll probably upgrade to
Windows98 and see if that fixes it.

You need a drivers disk for your cd-rom that need to be loaded into your autoexec.bat and config.sys files. You also need MSCDEX.exe on your hard drive either in the root or windows folder.

If you upgrade to W98 you should have no problem because W98 uses it's own drivers, but if you start from scratch (ie reformat your hard drive) you would then have access to a drivers disk.

Email me if you are still having problems as i might be able to help you out with some drivers.
