Iam using win 98 and lost my cd-rom. I cannot see it in my computer or device manager. I have tried to boot from floppy with cd-rom support with no help. Also tried to add the cd-rom using the add
hardware located in control panel. Where do I go from here??

Dusted1, I have not loaded any software to this machine, and yes the machine was doing fine 3 days ago.

Chris, The only reference to the cd-rom in the Bios is in the start-up sequence.

Thanks Again

Does Device Manager show any yellow ! next to Hard Disk Controllers ?
Run REGEDIT and go to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CURRENTCONTROLSET\SERVICES\VXD\IOS
Look on right hand screen for NOIDE and delete it, if it is found there.

In order to resolve this, you will need to go through the general
troubleshooting steps mentioned below. These steps will help to solve
the most common CD-ROM and CD-RW hardware problems.

1. Is the CD-ROM drive displayed in Windows Explorer?
a. Click Start.
b. Click Programs.
c. Click Windows Explorer.
d. Look for the CD-ROM drive icon. If you see it, the CD is
installed. Go to Step 3.
2. If the CD-ROM drive icon is not there, restart the computer.
From the Desktop:
a. Click Start.
b. Click Shut Down.
c. Click Restart the Computer.
d. Click Yes.
e. Repeat from Step 1.
3. If the CD-ROM drive is listed, test it by playing both an audio CD
and software CD. If not, go to Step 4.
4. If the CD-ROM is still not listed, or if you are unable to play a
CD, restart the computer and enter Setup:
a. Click Start.
b. Click Shut Down.
c. Click Restart the Computer.
d. Click Yes.
e. When the blue logo screen is displayed, press the F1
keyboard key to enter Setup.
5. Press F5 on the keyboard to Load Defaults, then F10 to Save and
Exit.
6. The computer restarts. Check to see if the CD-ROM drive is
displayed in Windows Explorer. From the Desktop:
a. Click Start.
b. Click Programs.
c. Click Windows Explorer.
d. Look for the icon that represents the CD-ROM drive.
7. If a CD-ROM icon is displayed, test the CD-ROM by playing both an
audio and software CD. If the CDs play, installation is
successful. Troubleshooting is complete.
8. If the CD-ROM is still unable to play a CD, remove the
CD-ROM/CD-RW icon from Device Manager to reinstall the driver.
a. Click Start.
b. Select Settings.
c. Click Control Panel.
d. Click the System icon.
e. Select the Device Manager tab.
f. Make sure View devices by type is checked.
g. Double-click CD-ROM icon.
h. Select the appropriate drive and press the Remove button,
followed by OK.
i. Click Start.
j. Click Shut Down.
k. Select Restart, followed by OK.
9. If the CD-ROM is still unable to play the CDs, call the Customer
Care Center.
10. If the CD-ROM is not displayed:
a. Right-click My Computer.
b. Click Properties.
c. Click Device Manager.
d. Click the + (plus) next to Hard Disk Controllers.
11. If there are any yellow exclamation marks showing conflicts, do
the following:
a. Click PCI Busmaster IDE Controller.
b. Click Remove.
c. Click OK.
d. Click Yes.
e. Click Close Device Manager.
f. Click Start.
g. Click Shut Down.
h. Click Restart the Computer.
i. Click Yes.
12. The computer shuts down and restarts. Follow the onscreen
instructions, clicking Next at the prompts. The controllers are
reloaded when the computer starts up. This should resolve any
disk controller conflicts.
13. Check to see if the CD-ROM drive is displayed in Windows Explorer.
From the Desktop:
a. Click Start.
b. Click Programs.
c. Click Windows Explorer.
d. Look for the icon that represents the CD-ROM drive.
14. If a CD-ROM icon is displayed, test the CD-ROM by playing both an
audio and software CD. If the CDs play, installation is
successful. Troubleshooting is complete.
15. If there are no conflicts in Hard Disk Controllers, or if the
CD-ROM is still not listed, or if you are unable to play a CD,
call the Customer Care Center. Hope this helps.
Best Regards
