All was fine until...One time i wanted to play a game and the cd-rom wouldnt even look at the cd. I tried fixing it but it worked once and then stopped working again.
It wont work in dos or windows, and it is a 40x drive.

If it won't work in Windows but works in dos it would be a problem with hard disk controller driver, but if you have Dos drivers loaded, and wont work in dos, it has to be hardware problem. Check all cable connections. If it is slave on primary controller, try switching it to secondary controller. Just last week I bought a new 40x, and it worked for two days, and went bad, so it can happen.

You might have turned the autoread component of your cd rom off. Once you insert the cd, under My Computer, click F5 and refresh the screen. As far it's inability to work in DOS, you probably don't have it set up in your config.sys
