Comment:

I got a DELL Optiplex GX1 with a win98 , which I wiped out. After formating, I use FDISK, then formatted again. Now I cannot get the cd-rom to work. When I use a bootdisk with cd-rom support, it keeps telling me: " Device Driver MSD001 - not found, aborting instalation" , so I don't get anywhere. I keep going on circles. I formatted and fdisked it a couple times. I changed the cables, the cd-rom, the cd-rom jumper to cable select, master and slave and nothing seems to work. I know the cd-rom is good.
Does anybody have any idea how I can make it work ?
Thanks.

MSCD001 device driver not found.

Try another boot disk, the cd-rom driver might be missing or config.sys is corrupted.

That message comes when windows setup cannot detecting a windows cd in the cdrom. So either there's a physical problem with the 98 cd or cdrom or there's not a 98 cd in it.

Ignore my above post. The error message under those circumstances is 'The Windows 98 Setup files were not found'.

Your message is either from the cdrom driver not loading in config.sys or mscdex not loading in autoexec.bat.

The generic 98 cdrom driver, oakcdrom.sys, gives a no drives found, aborting installation if it doesn't detect a cdrom.

Mscdex won't load unless the driver in config.sys loads. If mscdex doesn't load you get Device Driver not found: MSCDOO1 No valid cdrom device driver selected.

The message you describe isn't exactly either one. That may be because you're using some other driver, which may be your problem, or perhaps you generalized the error message.

Where did you get the bootdisks you're using? Was the cdrom working prior to the format? If you opened the case, could you have left a connection loose or misconnected something?

Yes, the cd-rom shows in the BIOS I suppose. I can changed the order how it boots, from C to cd-rom, to diskette and vice-versa. There aren't any loose or disconnected cables, I checked thoroughly. The bootdisk I got from www.bootdisk.com and www.freepctech.com .

Well your gmail account doesn't accept attachments. If you want the file you'll need to fix that. I'll check back tomorrow.

I never had problems with attachments at gmail, but any executable file will bounce back. Anyhow, you can send me the file to psychson@msn.com. Thanks.

Or Dave, you could change the extension to make it not executable, and psychson could change it back.

To offer another 98SE Bootdisk source.

The above bootdisk image file is a self extracting file and needs to be executed (run) from Windows in order to create the actual startup diskette. This is the same as the bootdisk which 98SE creates. This file will format the floppy, write the files to the floppy, then verify the file write, so it'll take a minute to create the bootdisk.

It was a zipped .exe file. I just resent it to the other address. It's a bootdisk that loads minimal drivers. Post back results.

what letter are you using for the CD-ROM drive? It will not be "D"...watch the screen...it could be "E". If you got the bootdisk from bootdisk.com, it will be "R".

If the (original) drivers aren't loading, there'll be no drive letter assignment to watch for.

Maybe DAVE's Bootdisk™ will fare better

No luck on Dave's floppy. It tells me now: DEVICE DIRVE NOT FOUND: "OEMCD001". No valid CD-ROM device drive selected.
I'm very sure that alll the cables are connected properly, unless the connector on the motherboard got screwed up.
Any other suggestion ?
Thanks.

That message is coming from mscdex not loading because the cdrom driver in config.sys didn't load. That driver didn't load because if couldn't find a cdrom.

Make sure both IDE controllers are enabled in cmos/bios setup. Verify again the connections and jumpers. What is the model # of the cdrom?

The cd-rom drive MODEL LTN-301. From LITE-ON CORPORATION.
By the way, the jumper is set to slave and I have checked every single cable a thousand times.
The only time I see the cd-rom in the BIOS is when it says BOOT SEQUENCE: CD-ROM FIRST. Besides that, it is not listed anywhere else. It shows me:
DRIVERS:
PRIMARY
DRIVE 0 AUTO IEDE DRIVE 15676
DRIVE 1 NONE
SECONDARY
DRIVE 0 NONE
DRIVE 1 NONE
There isn't any place where I can see the cd-rom. Why is that ?

If it's set as slave I assume it's on the same cable as the hard drive. Try connecting it on the other port--secondary IDE--as master. If it's already on the secondary change the jumper to master. Some bios' will skip slave drive detection on the secondary if no master is present.

The cdrom doesn't need to show in the bios drive setup. But I think the Dell bios will ID it there if it sees it. Since it's showing NONE I'm sure the bios isn't seeing the cdrom. Did you check that both IDE controllers were enabled? I believe it'll be on a different cmos page than the drive identification.

Also check the power connection. If another plug is available use it. Does the cdrom door open?

Normally a cdrom doesn't just die. It may stop reading cds but usually the drivers will detect it and it'll power up (lights flicker, door opens, etc.) So I'd suspect a problem with the connection or ports.

So it in not showing in BIOS. DAVE has covered most all possibilities. Sometimes you need to do an autodetect sequence, on my system it is the Enter key with a channel highlighted.

You need to have hard drives only on primary IDE channel and they MUST be jumpered as cable select. That is also a good idea on the secondary chanel with a Dell as well.

i would suggest clearing the NVRAM. You go to the F2 setup screen and press the keys to light up all 3 lights on the keyboard - numlock, capslock, shift lock and the hold down the ALT key and press e until it starts to beep. (It will beep 3 or 4 times.)

Then make sure the boot sequence (Control + right arrow) is set to floppy, CDROM and then hard drive.

Make sure the CDROM is good (swap out another to check) and you should be good to know.

I know GX1's well, and they all work fine with this setup. THe boot disk at www.bootdisk.com will get you going. Write back if you still have problems.

You can avoid many of these Windows problems with Linux. Linspire eases the transition for new users
