cdrom software locked, how to unlock???

Comment:

I have a 32x USDrive cd-rom in my computer (cpu is 300mhz AMD) and have encountered a problem with the cd-rom. I would like to know if there is anything anyone could suggest to help fix this problem.

Problem:
The cd rom has been software locked (according to the error I get from Norton System Utilities). If you try to access the D: drive (cdrom) from Windows Explorer you get the error 'D: is not accessible, drive not ready, retry or cancel'. Yes there is a clean (scratch free, blemish free) cdrom in the drive. If you boot to DOS and then try to access the cd-rom you get a similar error CDR101, Drive not ready, abort, retry, fail?

What happened prior to the error:
My stepson was playing 'Interstate 76' ( a car game) which requires you to have the cd-rom in the drive when playing the game although it did install files to the harddrive. This is a game that was recently installed but has been successfully played on the computer mutliple times (computer has been shut down and restarted successfully since the installation of this game). This cd-rom was purchased in Australia if that makes any difference!! He said he powered down the computer to go take a shower. When he came back a couple of hours later and started the computer back up he couldn't get the cdrom to work.

I've run the Window's system diagnostics from Norton's Systemworks v2.0 but it did not find anything wrong with the cdrom drive (D:). Yet while in Norton Utilites when we try to access the D: drive we get the error 'drive has been locked by disk utility' but then offers no help on how to unlock it.

Attempted resolutions:
I have uninstalled the Interstate 76 game from the computer hoping to free up the software lock but that did not work.
I deleted the cd-rom from the Control Panel\System\ Device Manager tab, rebooted, re-installed the cd-rom but it was still 'not accessible' (software locked)
I have totally disconnected the cd-rom from the power/IDE/sound connections, removed it from the BIOS setup, booted the computer to Windows where the cd-rom was no longer visible through 'My Computer', shutdown and then reconnected and reinstalled the cd-rom. Still locked though.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can unlock the cd-rom drive or am I even on the correct path?

Thank you

Mark

Never heard of locking a drive through a game. I would suggest going to a mom&pop pc shop and purchasing a cd-rom drive. I found a 32X for $26! Try the new cd-rom drive and if it works then your cd-rom drive proably went bad. If it doesn't work then I would start checking simple things first like the ide cable. Check your drivers - make sure you have the most recent versions. Check with the manufacturer of the cd-rom drive you have now and see if there were any similar reported problems and they may have a solution for you. I worked on a friends pc and spent countless days troubleshooting and researching - I found out that alot of individuals had had many problems with this particular drive. I finally installed a new drive and had no problem. Then out of curiosity I installed the old drive to a different pc and it still didn't work. The problem all along was the drive! I was getting the same errors as you were so give it a shot.

Good Luck!

"CDR101:Not ready reading drive D Abort, Retry, Fail?"
Reason: The CDROM is upside down, or the CDROM isn't in the drive.
You booted up DOS, all settings are correct for hard drive and settings are correct for the CDROM drive. The setup command was probably given at a D prompt and there wasn't a CDROM disc in the CDROM drive. CDROM drivers are loaded correctly; otherwise, you do not get this error. Note; other commands
at the D prompt produce the same error such as dir.

I have also encountered the same problems after installing and playing diablo 2. I had ran this program before and I always had this strange scratching and humming noise come out of the dvd-rom. But I did not have this problem with other software. I completed the game, uninstalled it, and I just recently wanted to play again. I also downloaded free cheat software along with diablo 2 so I could see what every spell had to offer. Now my dvd-rom is locked by a disk utility and it no longer works.
