I have a memorex 362E cd rom and I have a memorex crw-1622 rewritable. I am using windows 98. I start my computer and it just runs and runs and finally it boots up. then when windows 98 comes up, it can not find the cd362E. but it finds the other. it had them both found once and they were e and d drives but then I turned off computer and now it cant find the cd-362E. thanks for the help?

did you happen to add another drive between the time you had it and the time you lost it? If so maybe you have a lastdrive=e statement in you config.sys file that will not allow any drives past the e drive.
just a thought

yeah i have the same problem too. Only i have one CD-Rom it's a old creative CD620E. I just put a computer together and it loaded up fine with the cdrom, then i restart and it was gone. I looked at the config.sys and no restriction to drive e ?
anyone else have some suggestions?

I can't solve your underlying problem, which sounds as if one of the VXD drivers may have become corrupted, but might be able to explain some of your symptoms. On the initial load, the DOS drivers for the CD-ROM were probably loaded so you could see the CD-ROM. When the system rebooted, Windows loaded its corrupted or misconfigured drivers , and could no longer see the drive. If you restart the computer in DOS mode you will probably be able to see the CD-ROM again. You can then type WIN to move on over to Windows and preserve the DOS drivers. Once I figure out how to correct the native Windows drivers I'll try to send you a note.
