Hello: I'm new to this so if my info is wrong please ask me to clarify:
I am having a problem with my cdrom. On the hardware it says acer 52 max. When it does show up properly in the device manager where the + is beside the cdrom icon it should read ATAPI CD-ROM 52x max. When I first start my puter it says found cdrom Atapi 52 max.
Then I go into device manager and check to see if the cd icon is there. Sometimes it will show up there but has a funny name to it in the+ sign like now @TAP@. Says working properly. Disconnect, auto, and dma are all checked. firmware version: none. Target ID 1.
Unit # 0. Current drive letter E. Start and end are blank. Now when I try to load a data cd into it the light will flash for a sec, there is power and you can hear it spinning, but won't load. Do you have any suggestions how I can fix this? I read in a archive post something about running windows setup.exe. Is that what i would do, I have the disk windows 98 upgrade se. Now I don't know if I can use it but seeing as how the icon even though funny looking is in device manager, it may be posible for me to load that disk.
The next time I restart my puter or even cold start when i go to device manager the whole cd icon is gone, and all it shows is my 2 other drives plus the floppy drive. I am Baffled. Do you think you could help me. Thank you for your precious time.

I suspect the ide cable (flat grey cable) to your CDROM drive is either loose or faulty.

I suggest booting with a win98 floppy. Select 'with cdrom support'. See if you can access the drive from Dos. It will be drive F: instead of the normal Windows E:.

First step is to determine if this is a hardware or software issue. I would use a windows 98 bootdisk with cdrom support to test out the cdrom.

I have tried that and when i typed in F I would get cdr103.Then after all the cdrom not high sierra or ISO-9660 format reading drive F is Abort, Rety, Fail? Press F and get volume in drive f has no label. At the beginning it says tools successfully loaded to drive E:
My Auto exec.bat and config files are this:
C:\Autoexec.Bat
rem - By Windows Setup - MSCDEX/D:MSCD001 /V

My Config.Sys files are this:
C:/CDPRO/VIDE=CDD.SYS /D:MSC001

Don't know if this tells you anything but thought I would give as much info as possible.

Hello again: I shut down my puter completely and then put in the boot disk and a data cd.
I tried 3 different ones each time and when I typed the F: it changed to F. Then i typed in dir and it said Volume in F is J. Veron and showed the files. It did the same for win 98 and also Microsoft works suite.
When I rebooted after all this and checked into device manager thecd icon is there and in the + sign it shows up properly.

As stated before are my autoexec. bat and config. sys files ok? Do I have to do anything with them?

Before all this took place I couldn't load anything. Do I dare to try now? You input would be appreciated very much. Thank you kindly.

Yes config.sys and autoexec.bat are OK. The drivers are loading in config.sys. Mscdex in autoexec is REMed out so it won't load. In this way windows uses it's own drivers. Mscdex is probably activated in dosstart.bat so you can use the cdrom if you exit to dos.

When you put a data cd in you say it won't load. Does that mean it won't auto start or that the cd is not recognized?

I mean it won't auto start. Have also tired it in run: E:\setup.exe.This was before though, when I was first having problems. I scanned my puter and defragged my system last nite and when it finished the puter froze up and had to reboot puter the wrong way. When it did come up the cd icon in device manager was gone so I shut down the puter completely and then Started it again with the boot disk and the cd MSWKST02,at first the high sierra 103 came up but I pressed F: again and then the volume of F and the dir showed up again. Went to device manager and icon back properly. Haven't done anything since. Don't know what to do Can you Help? Thank you

I assume this is a GD132.DLL error. This may be related to your video card, but not much information on the internet about this. What type of video card do you have and is it working properly in device manager? Also, have you tried to turn off DMA on your cdrom to see if it helps?

Follow up:
I tried to install the program again after following the instructions from Nelson Library of uninstalling. In the win.ini file it left in the sounds a whole bunch of files. Left them there until i received further advice from you. Then tried to install it again and this came up. Logos20 caused a segment not present fault in MFCOLEUI.DLL at 0001:00000ad8. Took out cd.
So tried again. The MSdos prompt came up and said the file E:\Setup.exe is not a valid MS-DOS program file. It may be damaged.
Any ideas?

I have my puter at A,C not C, A. Would that have anything to do with it? Also if I uncheck my DMA would i not lose the icon in device manager. I did that once before and that is what happened.

That's your sound card, not the video, and it seems OK.

Exit to dos and at the c:\windows> prompt type:

scanreg/fix

and return. When it's done, reboot.

Don't worry how the cdrom is identified in device manager. As long as it's listed it should be OK.

Your A: C: boot sequence is correct.

Changing the DMA shouldn't affect whether the OS sees the cdrom or not. You should be able to keep DMA checked unless you've got an old motherboard that doesn't support ultra DMA.

Was the cdrom installed properly? Were any of it's jumpers changed prior to it not working?

The 'not a valid msdos program' was probably due to you trying to run a windows program while in dos.

After the computer has booted, put in a cd that should autostart. Give it 30 seconds or so to see if it starts. If not go to 'my computer' and click on the cdrom icon.

Don't use cd-rw disks. They can act screwy and may leave a false impression that something is wrong when it's not.
