CD-ROM problem!!help!!!

My cd-rom drive cannot read many cd-rom!! That's meant when I insert "some" cd into cd-rom drive and click open i recieve this : D:\ is not accessible. the devies is not ready. but when I borrow that cd to my friends there all can "open" the cd and can use the program in the cd!! what'wrong to my pc?? My cd-rom drives has something wrong or what?? I have a Atapi 32x cd-rom drives what should I do now?? Buy a new cd-rom drive?? Install a new driver?? Or what?? Please help me??? Thanks.....
what version of Windows? is the CD-ROM drive showing any conflicts in Device Manager? (Right-click My Computer>Properties>Device Manager) is this a recent problem? did you install any new hardware or software before the problem started occurring? need some more info before offering suggestions...
I presume it used to work? I have had/still got a similar problem, it turned out to be a dirty laser lens. I took the thing apart to clean it, and still have to occasionally, but I believe you can buy cleaners now.
