I've built a computer, ECS P4 motherboard, Celeron 1.7GHz processor,
and here is the problem. I've taken a hard drive out of another
computer, a Pentium 1, and that has Windows 98 on it. The hard drive
works, but when windows 98 loads up, the D: drive is not detected (CD-
ROM). However, it does show up when the computer boots and I get a
listing of what's installed. Also, I have a USB Del keyboard, and as
soon as Windows starts up, this keyboard no longer works. It does on
startup though, because I've tried pressing the numlock and caplok
keys, and the lights do come on.Any suggestions?

Hi J, hi everyone
As for your CD-ROM missing, maybe this helps solving your issue.
Cdrom missing in Windows
(href="http://home.insightbb.com/~mesich/master.html?cdrommissing.html)Regarding the keyboard, have you tried to tab the [F8]key, and boot into Safe Mode?
In Safe Mode open the Device manager, and delete all Keyboards, and USB devices, and whilst you are in there you can also delete any CD-ROM devices listed. Save the changes by clicking on OK and reboot the computer. If all goes well Windows should be detecting new hardware.
Hope this helps.

Usually when you swap a drive like that, you run into all sorts of probs. If you can, boot into safe mode, go to device manager & run down the list...you'll have to remove any entries left over from the old system that don't pertain to the new system. And, if you run into duplicates...for instance, two floppy drives...remove them BOTH...when you reboot, Windows will sort it all out.

When you installed the drive and windows booted up the first time in the new computer it should have gone through alot of 'new hardware found' as it detected the new hardware on the motherboard. If you had the 98 cab files on the HD (say in a win98 folder) it would have loaded as many drivers as it could from there.
If they weren't on the HD then you would have been asked to insert the 98 cd in the cdrom. But if the cdrom wasn't being recognized it couldn't have loaded what it needed anyway. If that were the case you'd need to boot from a bootdisk, choose cdrom support and then copy the cab files from the cd to the HD. Then reboot, let it go through the 'new hardware found' and direct it to the folder you copied the cab files to. You may also need to do an 'add new hardware' from control panel to install the drivers for the items it attempted to load but couldn't because the cab files weren't available on the initial bootup.
Once that's done you need to install the chipset drivers for that motherboard. Then install the drivers for any additional items like the USB KB, video, sound, etc.

Holding down the ctrl key during the bootup sometimes works. Otherwise repeated tapping of the F8 key dering the boot can bring up a menu.

Hi J/deacon30, jam, DAVEINCAPS, hi everyone
On boot tab the [F8]key till you get the Windows 98 Startup Menu, from the menu select option 3.
