CDROM no boot record found

Hi I'm trying to install Win98 on a new machine. I have configured the BIOS to boot directly from the Win98 CDROM. However, the machine is unable to find a boot record on the CD. I know for a fact that the CD is okay becuase it was tested in another machine.
I have tried installing DOS drivers for the Cd but to no avail. When I look in the BIOS the CD rom shows up as the Primary Slave.

There are some CDROM drives mostly old ones have a tendency of not reading Burned CD's or even original CD's like Windows 98 CD's. There is nothing you can do about it if that is the case. You may want to change the CDROM drive in order to make sure.

I think first of all you should go back to basics. If you have a new M/B as you suggest, do not set the HDD detect in the BIOS to user, but set them all on AUTO if you can. That is the first step.
Secondly, you say that you tried loading the CDROM drivers to no avail. What did you mean? That you cannot access the CDROM or that you still cannot boot from it? If you can access the CDROM after you boot up from a floppy can you read (DIR) the contents of the WIN98 CD?

Hi The CD is certainly bootable as its a genuine Windows 98 CD.
In anycase, I discovered that the CD drive itself is at fault.
