xx CDROM listing not showing in device manager xx
hey everyone,
well for the last month or so i have been trying to get my cd burner to work.'
i have tried everything (well that i have found), btu still nothing works.
my burner use to work before i reformatted, but ever since i have done that, windows does not detect any CDROMs, hence it not showing in device manager, or My Computer.
i have e-mailed HP about 5-6 times to try to resolve the problem but they have only pointed out the obvious things i have already tried.
today i installed my old normal CDROM which worked perfectly before i upgraded to the burner, and i thought this might work, but still it didn't work (power, functions, etc work, but windows doesn't detect it).
this has lead me to believe there is something wrong with the computer (either leads, cables, or windows in general).
has anyone had any experience with this kinda of problem?
is there anything i could do to fix the problem?
any help will be GREATLY appreciated, thanks alot!

Try putting the cdrom drivers in your config.sys and autoexec.bat. See if it loads the cdburner when booting up. Press F8 when windows starts and select command prompt. You should be able to watch what is happening.

Ben- When you go to Device Mananger, are there any yellow exclamation points by your disk controllers (IDE Primary, Secondary)?

Hey thx for replying.
I'm pretty new when it comes to tryin to solve this prob cause i have never had it before =P
Brent, when i open Device Manager, there are no yellow exclaimation points showing (when i expand the folders, there still are none).
Jim, where would i find the CDROM drivers at?
thc alot for the help so far, its greatly appreciated.

Putting the CD drivers in the autoexec.bat and config.sys files will make the drive available in DOS mode, but Windows should be able to detect it on it's own. At this point I'd question your IDE cable next. Have you tried a different one?

no i haven't tried that yet, i was thinking that too.
thx alot for the help so far.
i was talking to one of my friends, he seems to think it might be a motherboard problem (although he hasn't seen the computer) ... i'm hoping that isn't the case because i have no money to buy a new comp =(
anyway thx, i brought a new cable to day so i will be able to try it out =)
i'l let you know how i go

If you have your burner hooked up via SCSI - it won't show in your device manager unless you have it turned on before you turn on your PC. However, since you haven't stated wheter this is internal or external and what type of pc you have - it make it difficult to guess.
