I am writing this in favor of my father. He has an old 233Mhz pentium. Along with that he has an old Torisan 4x cd-rom in which has no model number in the device manager or even labeled on the cd-rom itself. my question is, is there any generic drivers for cd-roms. actually I think the drivers are already installed but it does not recognize the cd-rom in the device manager or in "my computer" Do I need drivers or do I need to do something else?

You need drivers - just about everything 4X and below were proprietary. The time you put into a project liek this - you can go out and buy a new IDE CDROM off Pricewatch.com for $7.00.

Did you set the Bios to recognize the rom? I would do this first. I wouldn't think you would need any drivers.
