HELP!!!
After I formatted my HD & rebooted my comp to install Win 98 SE again (using the Startup Disk & CD) the CD-ROM drive keeps opening & closing every 10 secs or so. Moreover, it won't read anything (how can it?)

No, it's not defective. I've been using it for around three years. I think this may be a software problem...

I would look for an up to date Anti Virus boot disk.
I had a similar prob a few years ago with a very nasty virus!
You know that coincidences do occur! The drive could just have decided to pack up. Any chance you can get another drive to check it? Bad luck if so

HI was you inside of the comp and maybe loosed the IDE cable! If you turn on comp with no bootfloppy nor a cd in drive, does it still open and close? If it does its not software problem. If it does not try a different boot floppy or chose to boot with out cd support and see if problem still there.

No, I didn't open the comp. As well, I've noticed that when the comp boots, it shows the following:
Primary Master: bla bla bla Primary Slave: bla bla bla Secondary Master: <-- Here is sometimes Cd Drive Secondary Slave: <-- Here is other times Cd drive
Sometimes it doesn't show it at all.

Maybe this is the first sign of the motherboard battery going dead.
Is the CD drive jumpered as master, slave, or CS?
