OS: Windows 98
CPU/Ram: Not sure
Comment:

I was just recently given a laptop that refuses to work. Everytime I logged on, a message would come up saying:

Illegal operation
Explorer.exe has performed an illegal operation ....

So, I formatted the C drive and tried to re-install Windows 98 but the CD drive won't read the disk.

With Windows 98, I require a driver for anything connected to the USB port so I can't use external sources (such as external CD drives or thumbdrives. What should I do?

You have to boot off a Win98 startup floppy...that will load the CD-ROM drivers, then you can run Windows SETUP from the DOS prompt

type of laptop info may help, and did it come with a setup cd,
assumming you either have the a: drive or cd: drive attached,
can you go into bios, and change startup to cd-rom, then if theres enough space on drive, to copy win cd to drive/ partition, then boot from floppy to setup win98 from drive itself,
other option may be to laplink to other computer to help setup,
more info: pre-read:
install without cd link
install swap link
step by step

may be other options...

Do like (jam)recommended and go to www.bootdisk.com and download Windows 98 OEM
bootdisk file.

This file is used to create a win 98 bootdisk.Don't just copy it to a floopy
disk.

(floopy)-We've been there before.LOL

Jam and Street1, I will do as you've said and let you know how it went soon. :)

Bofra, don't be bothered by these people. Whether you wanna use punctuation or not is your choice. As long as I can read what you said, why shood you or any1 else care?

Oh, by the way, I was talking to a friend of mine the other day about this and he suggested that I connect the laptop to a network and boot the laptop from the network. Has anybody here done that before? I'm really just curious about how that works because I've never done anything like that before and I've never heard of anyone doing it that way.

If anyone here has done that before, can you tell me how to do it? Thanx! :)

No, sorry, wrong answer. Punctuation and at least an ATTEMPT at proper sentence structure is NOT by choice.

How are you people ever going to PROGRAM anything if you cannot bother to use proper keyboard entries?

Now, network boot===

The bios of the computer you are trying to start on a network must support that feature, and be set in the "boot order" say, like,

1, network
2, floppy drive
3, cdrom drive
4, hard drive.

If there is no option in bios, it cannot be done.

Next, the network adaptor must have a ROM to boot to, be properly configured, etc.

Right. Thanx, name! lol I don't think it's gonna matter if people use bad punctuation on this message board. It's not like their programming anything when they're replying to me. :)

Thanx for all your advice, pplz, but none of them work. The laptop doesn't seem to want to work anymore, so thanx anyway! :)
