The CD-ROM drive is not recognized under Windows 98. Symptoms: There are yellow exclamation points in device manager next to the hard disk controllers and, the performance tab of the system properties says that the D: drive is running in MS-DOS compatibility mode. Solution: The possible cause to this is an entry to the Windows 98 registry of NOIDE. To correct this, follow the below steps: 1. Click on the start button, go to run and left click. Type in regedit and press enter. 2. Click on the + next to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE. 3. Click on the + next to SYSTEM. 4. Click on the + next to CURRENTCONTROLSET. 5. Click on the + next to SERVICES. 6. Click on the + next to VXD. 7. Double click on the folder IOS 8. In the right window there should be an entry that says NOIDE. 9. Left click on the NOIDE entry once to highlight it. Press the delete key on your keyboard to remove the entry. 10. Click on the x in the upper right corner of the registry editor to close regedit. 11. Click on the start button, Click on shutdown. Click the restart option. Click ok. 12. From there when the machine restarts your CD-ROM drive will be functioning normally. If these steps do not work or you do not have the option in the registry as it is described, then you may have a virus. Use a virus scanner to scan the system and search for viruses.

This may help..found this on another forum..Goodluck
