Comment:
Running Win 98 w/Creative 32x CD-ROM. CD-ROM will not play music CD.s. My default is set to "REAL PLAYER" software, with G2. I have no conflicts and my File Types shows "PLAY" in the action box. I've verified the connection between the CD-ROM and the Sound Card. Hopefully, u guys can help. Thanx

Maybe the real player g2 is the problem, have you tried a different player such as cd spectrum pro, or the windows cd player?

Vince, If the sound cable from the CDrom to the sound card has the small white plug at the sound card end, you should try turning it around 180 deg. If it has white shield that only lets it go one way, pry this shield off. Al

Before you start ripping your hardware to pieces, may I offer an extremely simple solution? I'm not trying to insult your intelligence, and it may not be applicable, but sometimes I think we all sometimes miss the little things. Anyway, check under your volume control panel and make sure that your cdrom isn't toggled as mute.
If that doesn't work, if you have extra components, try switching out the sound card or cdrom and see if it really is a hardware issue.

Yo, Vince.. Sorry you had to put up with each and every one of these responses dude.. I feel for you, especially with the "Not trying to insult your intelligence" guy... The truth is you know more than any of those people. They don't know what a file type or associating is man. That's the bad news. I have the same problem for windows 98, and ofcourse went through the same troubleshooting techniques as you did.. I tried Real G2 Player, Windows CD Player, etc, naturally, as I'm sure you did. This problem has many tech support reps baffled. My answer reluctantly is going to be reverting back to windows 95, for many other reasons including 32 meg and higher graphics cards such as Guillemot's Cougar Video Edition, including all directX and OpenGL functions in Win 98 (first edition). Windows 95 (950b or higher, which can and should be upgraded to OSR2) is trully more stable/solid than '98 first edition. So the good news is you are very smart and have been checking the right area. Bad news is you are asking in the wrong area. I have to leave here.. :\ take it easy bro. Best of luck convincing microsoft of the packaging hole!

I have the same problem with my cd-r/rw drive. It just suddenly stopped playing music CD's. I tried several different players. The technical support guy had no idea. E-mail me if you find the answer.
