However when it comes to runnning like a media cd or anything besides audio it will start the autoplay stuff and then cybermedia first aid syas that the file that gets autoplayed has crashed and what not and it stops right there. then if i manually try to start the setup program or whatever i want to run it will just spaz out and not do anything. basically it jsut won't run anything but audio cd's. help me please someone!!!

Howdy, Well first, First Aid sucks. It seems to cause more problems than it fixes. Have you tried disabling the auto run feature as well as disabling First Aid to see if the problem still exsist. Its hard to say what is causing the problem since I have never heard of it before. So give those things a whirl and see what happens.

Laters,

Kevin The Tech Dude.

Yeh, I had the same problem. Until recently, when I loaded an audio cd, CD Player would automatically launch and the music would begin. Recently, something happened. Now, I get a message saying "can't find play.exe." I found Autoplay in my software list and removed it, thinking that was the source of the problem. I'm still having the same problem. Thanks for any advice.

Solution:
Had the same problem. Never could find play.exe. But fixed the problem by installing this program - Real Jukebox. This will allow you to play audio CDs, and it starts automatically once you put the CD in the CD Rom. Just go to http://www.real.com/

Good luck

A computer tech guy told me never to use RealJukebox because of this problem. myadvice don't use it at all.

If you do find a place where i can download play.exe please email me and let me know.

the problem is that realjukebox changes the .cda extension in explorer to launch the realplay.exe / play instead of cdplay.exe. change the file association back to cdplay.exe and the problem will be resolved.

In addition to Di's response, here's another solution: Along with modifying the "CD Audio Track" file type, you may need to ALSO modify the file type "AudioCD". I had to change both of these types before I was able to get rid of that stupid play.exe message.

Best of luck to all.

Hi Marie, I checked in cd help and found the following instructions. Give this a go:
1. Double-click the My Computer icon.
2. On the View menu, click Options, and then click the File Types tab.
3. Click the AudioCD type, and then click Edit.
4. In the Actions list, click Play, and then click Set Default.

I tested this with mine and if the word play becomes bold it seems to work again.
Hope this helps,
Di

Hi folks:
I had the same problem. It is good to hear that sweet Di gave a concrete solution of the problem. But I did find another way to get rid of any problem that may create the computer to malfunction.

It is to divide the harddisk into 3 sections - for example x, y(bigest division), z. Then install windows operating system in a, and make a backup to z. Install program files to y. In doing all these you should at least have a harddisk of ~6 GB. If you find any malfuctioning, just copy back to a. It takes about 30 minutes to get a fresh but all instation.

Good luck,

Dipak

Encountered same problem as you all after uninstalling Jukebox.

Went CRAZY. I did every sugestion except dinging out the harddrive (not a cool move). I figured it out!!!!

Insert your OS disk (WIN 95). When the intro starts click the 'x' in the right hand corner. Go to Control Panel, double click ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS, click WINDOWS SETUP tab, dial down to MULTIMEDIA; highlight, click DETAILS button, remove check in front of CD PLAYER, click OK then APPLY buttons.

This removes the CD PLAYER COMPONENT.
Now reinstall CD PLAYER by highlighting MULTIMEDIA, click DETAILS, click a check in the CD PLAYER box, click OK then APPLY.
This installed everything I needed to be back to normal.(what ever that is)

Ann,
Do you still have the cdplayer.exe file in your Windows directory? Maybe Windows 98 calls it something slightly different. Have you used browse when trying to edit audiocd to make sure you are using the correct file name for your cd player.
Give this a go, you might just be naming it incorrectly and that is why it can't find the path.

Ann,
You should have your WIN '98 CD. Use it as I've used my WIN '95b CD.

You might want to try RESPONSE # 14 but in Audio CD type in the application:
C:\WINDOWS\cdplayer.exe/play

In CD Audio Track type in:
C:\WINDOWS\cdplayer.exe-play

This may be worth a try, but I still have faith in my original Delete/reinstall method.

After you try either procedure, you might Shut Down and Reboot your computer. This sometimes lets Microsoft upright it's self!

Hi Ann,
The reason you can't find play.exe is because it is a Realjukebox file and you have unistalled the program. The only other way would be to re-install Realjukebox to get play.exe back again. However, if your setting for AudioCD path is cdplayer.exe or cdplayer.exe-play I can not think of any other reason why it will not play. As for installing Realjukebox it is not something I would put on my computer again.

Hey everybody,
I have the simple solution for the lost play.exe file! If you are like me, Windows 98 came already installed on my computer, so I don't have a cd or disk. What I did to fix the RealJukebox "virus", was to go to the Control Panel, choose the Add/Remove Programs option. Then go to the Windows Setup tab, highlight the Multimedia icon, and choose Details. Next uncheck the CDPlayer icon, the choose Ok, Apply, and close out all open windows. Restart your computer. Follow these same instructions and re-check the CDPlayer icon. Choose Ok and Apply, then restart your computer again. This will resore the "play.exe" file and your CDPlayer will be fully restored!

Well I am having the same problem as everyone else. I downloaded real jukebox and then my computer would no longer play audio cd's. I got a message saying that play.exe couldn't be found.
I have followed the suggestions on this page to the best of my abilities but its still not working. Could someone please tell me what I did wrong?
I went to My Computer
view - options - file types
I changed the play settings in audio cd and cd audio track to C:\WINDOWS\cdplayer.exe /play
that didn't work.
So I then went to control panel to add/remove programs - windows setup
to the multimedia section and looked at details. I took the tick away from the
cd player and appied changes, then I went back and put the tick back and reinstalled from windows95, but it's still not working.
So what else can I try?

My computer now locks when I put in an audio cd after uninstalling Realjokebox. The cd drive (E:) works great for data cd's, but every time I pop in an audio cd everything freezes immediately and I end up having to turn my machine off.

I reinstalled my cdplayer.exe and can run audio off of my burner (D:). I can run cdplayer with E: as long as the drive is empty. As soon as I put an audio disc in the tray and close it everything (Windows) stops.

I have tried #24 #27 #35 etc. I'm at a loss. Any ideas?

Use the "find" function to locate cdplay.exe (normally in \windows or for NT, \WINNT\system32\ directory). Copy and paste in same location. Rename the file (Called copy of cdplay.exe) to "play.exe". Should work fine.

Real Networks is great for streaming media but a REAL PAIN for taking over EVERYTHING without asking with Real Jukebox. I wish they'd leave it out or make optional and not installed by default!

Like others here, I followed Response #35 (just a few minutes ago). It DID fix the annoying "can't find Play.exe" window (that would appear after I put a CD in and opened my MusicMatch Jukebox.)
HOWEVER,
it has created a BIGGER problem!

Now my MusicMatch Jukebox player/recorder dosen't work like it used to! Now when I put in a CD, the music starts immediately from my original CD player program. That's fine, BUT I can no longer RECORD a CD through my MusicMatch Jukebox. I can't even PLAY a CD through my MusicMatch Jukebox! What Happened?!
I can still play all the music that I already have saved in MusicMatch, but I want to record some more -add songs- and can't now. Has anyone else ran into this problem?
Is there an easy way to fix this? I have a lot of time invested in this music collection, so I welcome any suggestions.

In response to Response#65 (which I myself wrote), I just thought I'd post that I've fixed the problem I had. What I did was simply download an upgraded version of Musicmatch (for free). All my music tranferred itself into the updated program. Problem solved. Now when I put a CD in, it runs through the Musicmatch software and I can record again! And no more "Play.exe program not found" message!

Thanks to response number 55 from Phil, I just entered "cdplayer.exe /play" and everything is back to normal. Remember to put a space in between ".exe and "play".

Thanks everyone.

I have had the can't find play.exe problem. I also downloaded a lot of crap software off the net in the hope of fixing the problem. My cd player plays fine, but I have no sound from an audio cd. I can play a cd with a video clip fine and I can listen to wavs and other music, but just get no sound when playing audio cd's.

Should I dump real jukebox and realplayer and all the other crap.

HELP

re:Sanjo #61
Reinstalling the CD player from my Windows 95 disk worked for me too, but like Sanjo, no speakers, only headphones. After almost a year...so close. Then I just started plugging the speakers into different jacks, and woohoo! I'm listening to Mendelssohn as I type this...

Like most of you...RealJukebox really screwed me up when I deleted it. (good riddance)
solution #35 above worked perfectly for me, with the exception that I had the Win98 second edition disk.
I simply inserted it when askd for, and pointed the reinstall to my d drive (cdrom).
windows took over and presto!...cd functioned again, after I closed out and rebooted.

To get PLAY.exe back in your system just go to add remove programs, then Windows setup, then take the check mark out of Multiemedia...reboot and then add it back in and reboot again....problem solved.

Hi Everyone
If you're still having problems with your CD player after trying all of these suggestions.. i have another solution! Go into your control panel and select add/remove programs. Then select the "Windows Setup" tab. Click on "Multimedia" and uncheck the box for the CD player, then hit "apply". Then, insert your Windows 98 Cd into the Cd rom and select add/remove programs. Go back under the "Windows Setup" tab then "multimedia" then re-check the box for the CD player and hit Apply!! It worked for me! Hope it helps you all too!

Help! I've read thru ALL the suggestions and NONE of them worked for me. I don't know if I have maybe just changed too many of the files in "my computer>file options>file types" trying to fix this or if I am missing some.I can't seem to find the play.exe or the cdplayer.exe files, there may be more. Realplayer/jukebox support is supposed to be helping me too but so far NO solution. Should I re-download real jukebox to get my files back and then delete it again? How do I restore those files anyway? I'm ready to pull my hair out...can someone PLEASE help me??

I fixed the missing player.exe on my computer. You do not need player.exe, I dont think any of us ever had it. When you install a media player such as Windows Media Player or RealPlayer they push themselves on you as the default cd player (which I HATE!). If you uninstall the media player you are left with a bogus source (player.exe?) for the cd player.
Heres the fix.....
Open My Computer, then Veiw Menu, then Folder Options, File types tab. Find Audio CD entry and hit Edit, then hit Edit again in the next window, then hit Browse and browse to C:\windows and select cdplayer.exe. Hit OK, OK, OK and you are all fixed up. This entry will change the default player for the AUTOPLAY when the cd is inserted. There is a second entry called CDA File that selects which player is launched when you run a cd audio file in the explorer or My Computer. Do the same to midify this setting if you need that changed also.
What a pain in the but, 'ey? I think it is set up so after you uninstall a media player you can not play cd's anymore so you put it back in.... Foiled again boys!

I found a simple answer. Simply insert your windows 95 installation disk. Uninstall the CD player, then reinstall the CD player and voila the autoplayer will return. Im not a PC expert but have found out by trawling the net that program/ex does not exist. The message simply tells that the program you need to execute the task you are trying to run does not exist.

I tried solution No.35, but now I have a new problem on my Windows 95a machine: I get a "Set Details Error" message. Specifically, I see "mixerSetControlDetails (ctrlid=00000007h) failed on hmx=825cb00Ch, mmr=1026!" And the message repeats dozens of times, so that I must click OK repeatedly to get my screen back and keep things from locking up!

I just fixed my problem. First I removed the RealJukebox from the add/remove program. Then I went into EXPLORER, clicked on View/Folder Options...Click on File types...highlight AudioCD....edit...highlight play...edit change the APPLICATION USED TO PERFORM ACTION to cdplayer.exe

It should work now!
