I posted a message here about my cd-rom yesterday, i got a reply saying that since i could see my cd-rom in explorer, but not in system devices, that the drive is using dos drivers loaded by config.sys and autoexe.bat. And because of this i cannot get to the screen to turn my autoplay back on. Well, this is just one of my problems. Below is the letter i sent to the maximum pc doctor for his prognosis but didn't get a reply. I bet this is related to my drive not showing up. PLEASE HELP! My system is running very slow because of this.
---------------------------------
Sorry to say, my system is a Packard Bell pentium 90 with 40megs of RAM. It has all original hardware. When I look under System Properties my primary and secondary IDE controllers have yellow exclimation marks beside them. When I click on them the device status display says:
This device is not present, not working properly, or does not have all the drivers installed.
See your hardware documentation. (Code 10)
It says this on both IDE controllers. And also my CD-ROM is not showing up. I checked for a boot virus, but there wasn't one.
Also, when I click on performance, it says the following:
Compatibility mode paging reduces overall system preformace
Drive C: using MS-DOS compatibility mode file system
Drive D: using MS-DOS compatibility mode file system
I have tried over and over to fix these problems, but can find no solution. These problems have slowed my systems preformace down drastically. Whats your prognosis?
Thanks for listening!
JJ

1) Start, Run, regedit. Tree out the registry keys HKeyLocalMachine \ System \ CurrentControlSet \ Services \ VxD and click on the key IOS. On the right hand pane, delete the value NoIDE. This registry value is preventing your 32-bit hard disk controller drivers from being loaded. That's why you see all your drives using MSDOS compat mode and why you don't see CDROM in My Computer (it's likely plugged into an IDE cable). DO NOT ALTER ANY OTHER REGISTRY KEYS OR VALUES.
2) Restart the system. If your controllers are still in conflict, open the file IOS.log with notepad and look for the words "unknown hooker" and/or "mbrint.sys". If these are in the log file, chances are great you have a boot sector virus.
3) If this still doesn't work, you'll need a little more extensive tshooting than this (assuming you've remarked the DOS drivers for your CDROM in config.sys).Hope this helps!

Have you been doing any changes in bios? Try going into bios and reset it back to default. Your primary and secondary contoller should be up and running. It sounds like your going to have to reformat your drive if the previous advice does not work out. Are you using a Packard Bell restore disk? You may need to use that disk to set your computer back to original specs, because Packard Bell used a proprietary board for their earlier machines. The controller drivers listed in Win 95 may not be compatable with their board. In bios, you may want to set your drives to auto icluding your CDrom drive. Good luck.
