I posted a message yesterday and one person said that the reason i could not see my cd-rom in system devices is because my system was using dos drivers loaded at startup either in config.sys or autoexe.bat. I believe he was on the right track to solving my problems. Well, below is a letter i sent to another help line but never got a return. Please help! My cd autoplay doesn't work either and since the cd rom doesn't show up in system devices i cant check auto insertion.
-------------------
Sorry to say, my system is a Packard Bell pentium 90 with 40megs of RAM. It has all original hardware. When I look under System Properties my primary and secondary IDE controllers have yellow exclimation marks beside them. Also my cd-rom shows up in "my computer", but not in system devices. When I click on my IDE controlers the device status display says:

This device is not present, not working properly, or does not have all the drivers installed.
See your hardware documentation. (Code 10)

It says this on both IDE controllers. I checked for a boot virus, but there wasn't one.
Also, when I click on performance, it says the following:

Compatibility mode paging reduces overall system preformace
Drive C: using MS-DOS compatibility mode file system
Drive D: using MS-DOS compatibility mode file system

I have tried over and over to fix these problems, but can find no solution. These problems have slowed my systems preformace down drastically. Whats your prognosis?
Thanks for listening!
JJ

I have a question. Is your hard drive a SCSI drive by chance? Your CDrom may also be a SCSI drive also. Do you have a Packard bell Restore disk for your computer because it may be neccessary to use the factory to install the drivers for your motherboard because the older Packard Bell machines had the Packard Bell motherboard. Go to the Packard Bell website and look for a MMpack file.

Is the floppy drive in dos compatibility mode also? Is there a yellow ! nert to the floppy controler in device manager? If so, You need to edit the registry to remove the noide key>

As mentioned before, remove any DOS disk drivers (i.e. cdrom drivers like atapi.sys, mscdex.exe, etc.) from autoexec.bat and config.sys. If you still have the prob after this, you may need a registry patch.

For Win95, there are regisrty patches to recognize newer (later than '95) motherboard chipsets. If your motherboard chipset is intel (TX, LX, EX, BX etc), try installing the registry .inf patch:

intel registry .inf fix
http://developer.intel.com/design/chipsets/drivers/inf_update.htm

For some intel help try:
intel chipset help
http://support.intel.com/support/chipsets/inf_bm.htm

If your motherboard has a VIA chipset...
via registry .inf pci patch fix and busmaster driver
http://www.via.com.tw/drivers/index.htm

If your motherboard has an ALi chipset...
ali ide driver
http://www.acerlabs.com/acerlabs/drivers.htm

Once the correct one of these is installed. Reboot your system. Hopefully, all should be good now.

Good luck,
Marc
