After messing around in CMOS trying to put in a new HD, all of a sudden, after I boot up, the CD-ROM controller in the device manager is missing. The BIOS chip recognizes them, and they show up when I start with the Win98 floppy disk, but normal start up to windows shows nothing there. Where do I have to go and what do I have to do to get the CD-ROM controller back?

Are there also Yellow exclamation marks in front of the Primary and Secondary Ide Controllers in the Device Manager? Is the system running in the MS-DOS Compatibility Mode (Performance tab of the System Properties Window)?
If so, go into the Registry (START-RUN-type, REGEDIT, click OK). Navigate to the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\Currentcontrolset\Services\VXD\IOS
When at this key, highlight the IOS, and look in the right pane for a NOIDE entry. If found, highlight NOIDE entry, go to EDIT and select DELETE. Close out the Registry Editor and Restart the computer. Provided that the error which caused the NOIDE entry in the first place has been corrected, the computer should return to normal and your CD-ROM reappear.
