cd writer drive not detected!

Hi, Please someone help me here...my comp(win 98 se) is simply not detecting the cd writer drive!! it is detecting only the main drive and floppy drive.. what could be thge problem?? i already defragmented the system..nothing has happened...further more it keeps hanging...so annoying! im finding it very difficult cos i need to keep copying my files for project work.. thanks.
My cdrom drive disappeared about 2 months ago and I had done nothing unusual before this happened. One day, I ran Norton Antivirus on the pc & it found that it was infected with the NYB virus. Norton removed the virus & when I rebooted, my cdrom drive reappeared.
