Thankyou OtheHill
Sorry for being vague. I've tried to write to several cdrw's and the message back is destination disc is write protect.
This has only recently started happening.

What program are you using to attempt writing to the CDRWs?

Sorry OtheHill, not sure what you mean by program. I have tried to download spread sheets and some photos from my camera but get the same message.

In order to burn a CD, you first need to have a CD Writer. Are you sure that you do indeed have that? Then, you'll need to have a CD Burning program, such as Roxio, Nero, etc. Did you get any software with your computer and/or the CD writer you have installed?

Right, the software that came with the cd writer is Pinnacle Instant CD/DVD Suite. I have in the past just saved to cdrw disc just by Save As then the cdrw drive (in my case drive E). But then recently I've been unable to because of this write protect situation. Could I have then lost the program that you refer to (Roxio, Nero etc).

It sounds like you 'might' have a broken drive. You could try swapping drives with a friend to see if that's the case.

I can't say I have EVER used a CDRW disk. I do think there is a way to mark a CDRW to not allow further writing to the disk that is reversible, unlike finalizing a CDR. Being that I have no personal experience with this issue I can't comment further.

A thought just crossed my mind. Are you using a packet writer to access the disk. Like InCD, Direct CD or Drag to Disk?

OK, you are using the basic CD writing available in WinXP. What happens when you try a fresh CDR or CDRW disk?

Thanks Jennifer, then the OP can't be doing as stated. I monitor General, XP, 98, 2000 forums. Get crossed sometimes.

You maust have had some sort of additional software in order to write to ANY CD.

If the disk showed up in My Computer then you have/had a packet writer. These are software programs that allow you to drag and drop files to the drive or an icon of the drive. I mentioned the names of the most common ones. If you didn't remove the packet writer then it should still be available.

Have you re-installed Windows, changed CD drives, or made any changes to your computer?
Do you have more than one CD drive? Do you have more than one partition on your computer? If your CD writer is labeled E: then you either have more than one CD drive or more than one drive/ partition.

OtheHill, I haven't re-installed Windows or changed CD drives or made intentionally known changes to the computer. I do have two CD drives E & F (only E writes). And I have only one partition. I'm hoping that I've lost some part of my CD writing program, and all I need to do is find and re-install. Sound too easy ??

Wihtout the installation CD you will not be able to re-install the program.

Go to start> setttings> control panel> add/ remove programs. Look there for any programs with Nero, Roxio, Adaptec, Direct CD, InCD, Drag to disk.

If you find anything like that don't change things, just post back with findings.

Well then If you have help files with that suite, try to find the settings that allow what you want.
