I believe you will have to install the driver for it.

You shouldn't need a driver. It's probably running in msdos compatibilty mode. Go to system in control panel and click on performance to check.

This may help:

Brad,

Did you use the Compaq Recovery CD or the QuickRestore CDs for the Presario 4528?

Is the CD-ROM drive that is not found the one that originally came with this PC, or is it a different one?

Try to reinstall the CD-ROM.
Remove it from Device Manager while the computer is in Safe Mode, and then restart the computer so the system can detect and reinstall the device.

1. Press F8 during Startup to access the Startup menu.
2. Choose Safe Mode from the Startup menu and press Enter.
3. From the Desktop, right-click My Computer and select Properties.
4. Click the Device Manager tab.
5. Double-click CDROM.
6. Click the listed CD-ROM drive to highlight it.
7. Click Remove.
8. Remove any additional CD-ROM devices in the same manner.
9. Click OK.
10. Restart the computer. Windows should automatically recognize CD-ROM drivers.

If that does not work, can you get the Model and Number of the CD-ROM? Might be one of these proprietary drives...
