Comment:

I insert cd into cd rom (being G drive) Come up as G:/ Not accessible Device not ready.
In device manager, the cd rom details all correct and no error messages or yellow circles or excamation marks. In properties it shows it works properly, and in settings it is on the correct drive, and in the resevered drive. It shows up on BIOS as secondary slave. I have deleted cd rom details in device manager in safe mode and rebooted. No luck. In msdos it shows device not accessible.
Have taken off cover, all plugged in, nothing come adriff
I have a feeling I deleted some important files with a unintaller program, but as this was only trialware, i only had 3 turns of it, and then it expired, and I cant re add the backups of the deleted files. Is there anyway, that I can get these files somewhere off the net, as, I cant get these files off my win98 cd, as of course , it isnt working!!
HEEEEEEEELP
Many thanks
Libby (ps if you dont mind, can you email me when you post a reply ? Please?!)

You could try checking the jumper settings on the CD-Rom drive and make sure it is set to the master(m) or slave(s) instead of cable select (CS). Sometimes the Bios and windows can see the device by you still can't access it.

If everything seems just fine in CMOS and Windows, you're probably not missing any files. It may be that the CD ROM drive can't see your CD (I hope you have a CD in the drive or you will get this kind of error)! Try cleaning the lens of the CD ROM drive. Be extremely careful not to bump or otherwise abuse the lens. Some folks use compressed air and a CD ROM drive cleaning kit which is available anywhere CDs are sold. I prefer to disassemble the drive and clean things up with Q tips and isopropyl alcohol. Another thing to do is buy an inexpensive CD ROM drive (make sure the proper drivers come with it) and try it out. This may get you up and running quickly and prove whether or not there is a hardware problem with your present drive. Good luck!

I am having the same problems with my CYBERDRIVE 240D 24X CDROM. I am able to load a game with it but when comes time to run application and it needs to access the drive, guess what... it cannot find the drive. Fortunately for me, I still have my old 8X CDROM working.

At times unexpectedly the cd rom works. Than at other times I get a f:\(my non cd music drive) is not accessible. The device is not ready error message. What can the problem be.

I'm having a similar problem with the "device not accessible" error. I just installed a new HP 4x4x24 CD/R as a slave and kept my old 4X CD-ROM drive as the master. The old drive worked fine before the insatllation, but now causes the error message with only audio CD's. Data CD's seem to work fine. Is there hidden software somewhere that would prevent reading an audio CD while a CD-R drive is attached? (Maybe I'm too paranoid.)

I have the same problem. My cd-rom says that cannot be accessed. Every once in awhile it runs a cd, but that is not very often(maybe 1 out of 50 times). I do have a yellow circle with an exclaimation poin, but i don't know how to get rid of it. Is my problem with the cd-rom lens, or with my cd-rom setup? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

this worked for me ONCE but the problem re-occurred after installing some new (trivial, ie read unnecessary) software a few months later: unplug your CD-ROM's ribbon cable and power supply. Restart your computer in safe mode and remove the CD-ROM from device manager. Restart and then shut-down. Plug your CD-ROM's ribbon cable and power supply back in. Then restart. At this point WIN95 should do an auto detect and install the right drivers.
Some Notes: MSCDEX file is ONLY required if you use the CD-ROM in DOS mode.
The more "cutsie" software (including utilities) I download and install, the more I regret it. The one diagnostic tool that I have not have not had any problems with is Scisoft's SANDRA.

I recently installed an educational game for my kids. I installed the game, played it for a minute or so to make sure it worked, then exited the game and removed the CD. I went on line to check my mail, then after disconnecting, I put the CD back in so the kids could play the game, I got the message that the D:\is not accessible (D is for CD) The drive is not ready. I have no idea how to go about determining what type of CD ROM I have, let alone the manufacturer. I did go into device manager and removed the CD and tried rebooting, hoping Windows 98 would do an auto install but no luck. I do not know how to determine the manufacturer of my CD. When I did click on the CD to see what type it was this is what was listed: OIPD 36T OPC-K101/ST1 Any help would be apprectiated!

Verify the power cable and the bus cable are each in their correct position. Try turning them over.Or maybe the bus cable is damaged.

I recently got a new computer from my Bro. He left for australia and took the hardrive. so I bought a new hardrive and now I have to reinstall all the drivers. I have a creative CD3630E peace of crap.

I used my old computers boot disk. and the computer think the CD-rom is an Atapi CD-rom

when i go into windows there's no CD-rom drive, and no drive letter. I've tried installing countless drivers i found on the net but none of them worked. I think i need a *.inf file.

please E-mail me if you have any answers
thanx

Basically to answer all your questions above - your CD roms are knackered.

I am sitting here looking at a CD3630E and its dead too. Works sometimes. Probably a transport problem. I build computers and have come across this a lot. CDROM are cheap pieces of rubbish. The worst ones I've seen are by Artech, which crash your computer if you put it on the same bus as your IDE and open the CD drawer whilst reading from the HD !!

Best ones I've ever installed/owned are the ASUS CDS-400 drives.

i have had this same trouble often , my husband has taken it apart and cleaned the lens many times , but i have also found that by just opening up "my computer" then ejecting the cd then right clicking an empty space in my computer , then clicking refresh , it searches for new objects , when it is done refreshing , my cd is showing where it should be , sometimes this may take about 10 tries , but it works... good luck to everyone with this problem , I know it is very frustrating .
