Greetings from England!
See article bfeller 29/10/04
I have exactly the same problem.Shows CD Roms in bios but not in device manager.Did you resolve it? Did the new battery do anything?
I have followed all suggestions from response number 1 to 10.Both primary & secondary IDE controllers show (!) in device Manager.
When I update drivers it gets no better.Even reinstalling both CD roms .Windows searches for divers for new hardware and just keep putting in drivers from previous. They still have (!) in Device Manager.Maybe drivers are corrupt.
Maybe motherboard socket is not working connected to CD roms(2)I have 2 hard drives C & D a floppy A and 2 cd rom drives, one a rewriter. They (CD Roms) used to work on E: and F drives. Now they've gone AWOL.I'm mistified!
One CD Rom is dated 1999 and the other Sept 2002.Too coincidental for 2 to fail at once?

Click on the ! items in device manager and see what it says about the problem. You may need to install chipset drivers for windows to properly setup the IDE controllers.

Just to clarify for others, I think Andrew is talking about this previous post:

1st thing to do is to make sure your devices are configured properly:
primary master = HDD w/OS
primary slave = CD drive
2ndary master = CD burner
2ndary slave = 2nd HDDUse master or slave jumper settings - do not use cable select. Use 80-wire ribbon cables on both channels. Check that your BIOS IDE settings are on AUTO
Asus A7N8X-X
1800+ @8x210mhz
512mb PC3200
Ti4200/8X 128mb
WDC 60GB

You may have a NOIDE entry in the registry causing your CDROMs to go missing.
Run REGEDIT and go to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CURRENTCONTROLSET\SERVICES\VXD\IOSLook at right hand screen and delete NOIDE if you see it there

Krystyna's reply (No 5) has resolved my secondary IDE controller in device manager as well as bringing up my 2 cd rom icons in My computer.Could you resolve my primary IDE
contoller this still has "yellow" (!) against it.I cannot run media player so cannot play music cds on either cdrom. Maybe my first cd dated 1999 is broken and affecting cd number 2 (the secondary IDE contoller)?
I think you are all helping to resolve my issue. What a team!P.S Derek's reply is correct take a look.

Hi Andrew
Try removing both Primary and Secondary IDE controllers in Device Manager.
Then reboot, and Windows will automatically re-install the both.Krystyna

Hello everyone,
Andrew,
I believe the answer to the problem with the Primary IDE is within Response #1 posted by DAVEINCAPS.
Click on the ! items in device manager and see what it says about the problem.
Let us know what you find. You may need to install chipset drivers for windows to properly setup the IDE controllers.
and find them.
You can go to this linkBest Regards,
Mesich

Mesich,
It says This device is either not working properly is not present or does not have all the drivers present. However when i update nothing improves it say it has selected the best driver. In drivers it says that it is functioning. My PC is a Club 70 H and is not shown in the PBell link for updating drivers.
Krystyna,
Tried you last suggestion.Still primary with(!)

Andrew
In Device Manager, look at Performance tab along the top menu.
Does it say that your C: drive is running in MS-DOS Compatibility mode ?

Krystyna,
Yes it says as you say.

Okay...
In the Performance tab, click File System.
Check to make sure that the "Disable all 32-bit protected-mode disk drivers" check box has not been selected.
If it is ticked, untick it.

Also check in the registry for...
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Class\hdc\0000
InfSection=BAD_IDEDelete BAD_IDE if you have it there.

My registry says Dual_good_ide.
I thought you had it then ! But no.
I am amazed of your registry knowledge.Right in the middle of the brain we were then!

I think I'm fast getting to the point of no more bright ideas !
One last gasp...rename these two files
C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT to AUTOEXEC.ZZZ
and C:\CONFIG.SYS to CONFIG.ZZZIf real-mode CDROM drivers are being loaded via these two files, maybe they are preventing protected-mode driver implementation.
Krystyna

Team,
Thanks for trying.Tried your suggestion Krystyna. No luck.
I'm off for afternoon sleep now to forget about pc's for a while.I'm exhausted!

When you do the 'upgrade drivers' from device manager, windows will always say it has the best drivers installed unless you give it a specific place to look for the new drivers.
If you download the chipset drivers it should be an .exe file that you'll run to install the drivers. You won't even need to do the 'upgrade driver' route.
Also run msconfig, click advanced and make sure 'force compatibility mode disk access' is not checked.
