tecra 510cdt-bad motherboard so bought laptop with good one and switched out guts of old laptop...now cd rom not recognized... any suggestions...appreciated...

What does the Device Manager say about the cd-rom? If you switched HD from old laptop and are using Cd from new HD, you probably need drivers for the Cd-ROM. Unlikely that the new HD had them unless it was already using same CD-ROM.
