hi i'm a novice and i think i screwed up my pc bigtime. my cd-rom has vanished and i have compatibility mode paging reduces overall system performance.and drive a & c using ms-dos compatiblity mode file system.i also have yellow exclamation marks in the device manager over my standard floppy disk controller as well as my primary and secondary ide controller(dual fifo).tell me i'm not totally screwed?

Compatibility mode can be caused by alot of things. First run msconfig and click 'advanced'. Make sure 'force compatibility mode disk access' is not checked.
If that doesn't do it and this condition just happened within the last few days, exit to dos and at the c:\> prompt type:
scanreg/restore
and enter. Choose a registry to restore with a date that precedes the problem. The reboot. This often is all you need to do.
Any software you installed after the date of the restored registry will need to be reinstalled since there'll be no reference to it in the registry.

thanks for the replies!
I did as suggested. i unchecked the Force thingie and got a blue screen telling me an OE occured at the Vxd thingie.The scanreg/restore failed to restore. And after following the link's suggestions, got a message saying explorer failed and mgsvr32 also failed. What do i do now?

If 'force compatibilty mode. . . ' was checked then that was the reason for your drives running in msdos compatibility mode. Apparently some of the 32 bit mode drivers aren't loading correctly and for whatever reason compatibility mode was checked. Those drivers probably weren't related to your drives.
What happened to the computer between the last time it worked OK and the first time it didn't?
Just in case, post back contents of your config.sys and autoexec.bat.
You may eventually need to reinstall windows over itself.

my config.sys is as follows
DEVICE=C:\\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS
DEVICE=C:\\WINDOWS\EMM386.exeand my autoexec.bat is :
SET BLASTER=A220 I7 D1 H5 P330 T6
SET CTSYN=C:\WINDOWS
C:PROGRA~1\CREATIVE\SBLIVE\DOSDRV\SBEINIT.COMI do have good news though. After some searching thru this forum, I came upon a way whereby I deleted the enum key in the registry(under hkey_local_machine) got my cd-rom drive back. however now the device manager has an exclamation mark over the DMA controller in my System devices directory.
Thanks for the suggestions so far. Any further advice on how to improve on my current situation?

I'm suprised deleting the ENUM key worked in your case as I thought the errors you were getting were software related.
You may need to check that DMA is enabled in cmos. Also you may need to install the chipset drivers for the motherboard.

Oh, and config.sys and autoexec.bat look OK. Sometimes stuff loading there can cause msdos compatibility mode.

Thanks DAVEINCAPS!
How do I check that DMA is enabled in cmos?
And where would i get the chipset drivers for the motherboard. Do i have to open the case and check physically the name, brand and serial no. for the mobo's manufacturer?
Thanks for making this newbie's day!

DMA may or may not be adjustable in cmos. If so it would probably be in chipset features if you have an award bios.
I always open the case to look at the motherboard for the model number. If the manufacturer isn't listed you can do a google search for the model number. The chipset drivers should be on the motherboard manufacturer's site.
