Hi. Over the past four months or so, I would occasionally find that my CDR and CDRW (D: and E: drives under My Computer) would spontaneously disappear. In the past, I had been able to fix the problem with an Adaptec Win ASPI file. This time, nothing I do makes a difference. I called Memorex, and they said that the CD rom device might have physically become disconnected, or that the two CD roms I had were somehow cancelling each other out. All I knew was that I had this problem before, and with the drivers or ASPI file or whatever, I was able to fix it. For this, and a bunch of other reasons, I would like to upgrade my operating system, but first I want to back up data, so I need my CD-RW. Also, I think I need the CD working to load a new operating system in in the first place, right?
Thanks.
James

It may be motherbord problem Can be check at BIOS .Disable the CDrom and use CDRW , if Ok , check IDE cable or use another CDRom to test if cdrom is faulty, discard it
use 1 IDE cable hook to primary ,or secondary to find out which. loop with hardisk and CDRW or CDR , if comfirmed replace MOMO. however it is OK if one IDE cable as my previous MOMO was faulty at the primary and only use secondry your case most like ly secondary is faulty

I agree with disconnecting the cdrom drive. Try that for a while. I've seen multiple systems where more than one CD drive causes that kind of problem. I think it's a Windows quirk with some motherboards. Separating the CD drives on to different IDE channels very often solves the problem.
