Both my D: & E: Drives are vanished. I don't know what the problem might be, I would really appreciate some help.
When I start Windows it recognises my CD ROM but not my CD-RW. Under Devise Manager I have the following :
Under CDROM I have :
1. Toshiba DVD-ROM SD-M1402 (The icon is marked with a red X)Under Hard Disk Controllers I have :
1. Intel 82801AA Bus Master IDE Controller
2. Primary IDE Controller (dual fifo)
3. Secondary IDE Controller (dual fifo)(The icon on this one is marked with a yellow exclamation mark)Both my CD/DVD Rom and my CD/RW respond to the eject button.
Thanks in advance for any help.

"3. Secondary IDE Controller (dual fifo)(The icon on this one is marked with a yellow exclamation mark)"
This is the controller which the Optical Drives is attached too, if you right click the entry and check the properties it will usually identify why it is not working.

If it's only been doing this a few days and you haven't made any hardware or software changes since it started, you may be able to restore a previous registry.
From windows, shutdown the computer and choose to restart in msdos mode. At the prompt type scanreg/restore and enter. Choose a registry to restore with a date that precedes the problem.

I managed to get back Drive D: by downloading the Toshiba drivers from their site and re-installing the drivers. Now Under CDROM I have :
1. Toshiba DVD-ROM SD-M1402 (The X icon marked in red in now gone)
And under :
Hard Disk Controllers I have :
1. Intel 82801AA Bus Master IDE Controller
2. Primary IDE Controller (dual fifo)
3. Secondary IDE Controller (dual fifo)(The yellow exclamation mark is also gone)The problem is now that I still don't have drive E: (The Cd/Writer Drive).
How can I get this drive to function ? I don't know what drivers should I download (if it has anything to do with the drivers) because I dont even now what type and brand it is.
This drive was not included when I purchased my pc. I purchased/added the cd/writer later on.

Click the 'performance' tab (by the device manager tab) and see if it's running in msdos compatibility mode.

If it's not showing in 'my computer' either then most likely the bios isn't seeing it. Is the writer by itself on the secondary or is the DVD on that port also?
Make sure its cable is securely connected. Make sure both IDE ports are enabled in cmos/bios setup.

I don't know what happend. I witched on my pc today and I got back the same problem, I have a red X next to Toshiba DVD-ROM SD-M1402 under CD-ROM in the Device Manager and a yellow exlamation mark next to Secondary IDE Controller (dual fifo).
I checked the BIOS setup and I have the following settings, I haven't touched anything yet because It's the first time I'm messing with the BIOS setup :
IDE Drive 1 : Maxtor 92049U3-(PM)
IDE Drive 2 : None
IDE Drive 3 : Toshiba DVD-ROM SD-M1402-(SM)
IDE Drive 4 : NoneAll settings for all the 4 IDE Drives are set to Auto, but I have the following options to choose from :
None
Diskette IZOM/ZIP
CD-Rom
Other Atapi
UserWhat should I do ?
Regarding the connection, I think taht everything is connected properly because bothe the Drives respond to the eject command and when I start/re-start my PC the green light on both of them lights up.
I also noted soemthing else, when I re-start in Safe Mode, I have the following under the Device Manager :
Under CD-ROM I have :
1. IDE-CR R/RW 12x8x32
2. Toshiba DVD-ROM SD-M1402 (The icon in safe mode is not marked with a red X)Under Hard Disk Controllers I have :
1. Intel 82801AA Bus Master IDE Controller
2. Nikon Digital Camera Controller
3. Primary IDE Controller (dual fifo)
4. Secondary IDE Controller (dual fifo)(The icon in safe mode is not marked with a yellow exclamation mark)
5. USB Device
6. USB Device DriverAnother thing, the settings for the Intel 82801AA Bus Master IDE Controller are already set to "Both IDE Channels Enabled"
Thanks In advance for any help give.

I forgot to mention, I noticed now that when I start/re-start my PC I get the following message :
THE FOLLOWING FILE IS MISSING OR CORRUPTED : C:\ATAPI\TOSHV224.SYS
THERE IS AN ERROR IN YOU CONFIG.SYS FILE ON LINE 1
C:\>C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\MSCDEX.exe /D:MSCD000/L:D
DEVICE DRIVER NOT FOUND: 'MSCD000'
NO VALID CDROM DEVICE DRIVERS SELECTED

Run msconfig and remove check mark in front of "process autoexec.bat" and "process config.sys". Then restart your system.

Finally I got my D: & E: Drives back, I tried re-installing the drivers for the Toshiba DVD-ROM SD-M1402 and noticed that the installation was not locating the autoexec.bat file because it's attributes were selected as "Hidden".
Now I have both Drives, but unfortunatelly the problems are not finished yet.
In the Device Manager under CDROM I only have the Toshiba DVD-ROM SD-M1402 listed and ist's still marked with a red X, I don't have the IDE-CR R/RW 12x8x32 listed (altough in My Computer I do have the E: Drive) ???
Under Hard Disk Controllers I still have Secondary IDE Controller (dual fifo) with a yellow exclamtion mark next to it.
I also tried using Nero to make a copy of a CD but it's saying taht the "WIN-ASPI File cannot be found"
I extracted a copy of the WNASPI32.DLL, WINASPI.DLL, APIX.VXD & ASPI2HLP.SYS Files from my WIN98 CD and put them in the folders they belong to. Unfortunatelly I still get the same message when I try to use Nero.
Any Clues ?

I ran msconfig and unticked the box next to the process autoexec.bat and process config.sys. I restarted the PC and the drives letters D: and E: were gone again. I re-ticked them, re-started and the Drive Letters were back again.
Any Clues regarding "Response Number 11" ?

Post back contents of config.sys and autoexec.bat.
Go to the motherboard manufacturer's site and download the 98 chipset drivers for it. You can find some also on intel's site.

Thanks for replying again DAVEINCAPS
Contents of Config.sys read as follows :
DEVICE = C:\ATAPI\TOSHV224.SYS /D:MSCD000
device=c:\windows\himem.sysContents of Autoexec.bat read as follows :
C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\MSCDEX.exe /D:MSCD000 /L:D
C:\PROGRA~1\GRISOFT\AVGFRE~1\BOOTUP.exe
SET PATH=%PATH%;C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\ULEADS~1\MPEGAny Clues ?

I now also realised that under the "Performance Tab" in the System Properties I have the following :
Drive D is using an MS-DOS compatibility mode file system.
Drive E is using an MS-DOS compatibility mode file system.

You mentioned the HD controller settings in device manager were 'both IDE controllers enabled'. Check in cmos/bios setup to make sure both IDE controllers are enabled there. Windows can't enable the hardware unless it's already enabled in the bios.
All the drive ID settings in cmos should be AUTO.
A scanreg/restore often fixes msdos compatiblity mode when other hardware or software considerations don't seem to apply. But I guess that didn't help in your case.
Run regedit and do a search for NOIDE. Delete any references you find.
Install the chipset/ide drivers for the motherboard. They should be available on the motherboard manufacturer's site or from Intel.
Download and install 274370USA8.exe from here. It's an update to one of the files windows uses to access cdrom devices.
The cdrom driver that's loading in config.sys is a dos driver. That shouldn't be needed for windows. The usual reason to load it there is for cdrom access if you shutdown and exit to dos. And in that case you wouldn't have mscdex loading in autoexec.bat. You'd create a DOSSTART.BAT file in the windows folder and have the mscdex line there. Dos needs both the cdrom driver and mscdex to load for the cdrom to work. The driver must load in config.sys but mscdex can be run at anytime. Running it from dosstart.bat can prevent problems in windows.
I know in your case loading it makes it show in 'my computer' but I think for the time being it's be best to leave config.sys and autoexec.bat disabled until you get them to show in windows normally. Try the stuff I just mentioned above and see if it helps.

I tried everyting you told me my friend, this thing is driving me crazy.
I sill have the yello exclamation mark.
I have an Intel 815 chipset, I found this site :
http://support.intel.com/support/chipsets/sb/CS-009247.htm
Could you do me a favour and maybe visit this site and tell me exactely which files I should download.
Thanks in advance.

Another thing DAVEINCAPS, I mentioned earlier that my BIOS Setup is as follows :
IDE Drive 1 : Maxtor 92049U3-(PM)
IDE Drive 2 : None
IDE Drive 3 : Toshiba DVD-ROM SD-M1402-(SM)
IDE Drive 4 : NoneAll settings for all the 4 IDE Drives are set to Auto, but I have the following options to choose from :
None
Diskette IZOM/ZIP
CD-Rom
Other Atapi
UserAre these correct considering I have a DVD/Rom and a CD-RW installed ?

Yeah, the 815 download in the center column should be what you need. The other downloads may not be needed and shouldn't affect the problem anyway.
The bios will see the cdrom with a setting at AUTO. As a matter of fact, the bios doesn't even need to see the cdrom. Even if it's set at NONE, windows will still find it. (This isn't the case for hard drives.)
But if the cdrom is set at AUTO and it doesn't show on the posting screen then I'd think there's some physical problem with it. You can try changing it from AUTO to CDROM but I don't think that will matter. You may want to check that the jumpers are correct and the cable is tightly inserted.

I installed the drivers for the 815 chipset, at least I managed to get the D: & E: Drives in My Computer, with Config.sys & Autoexec.bat not selected.
The CDRom is set on Auto and it does show on the posting screen, therefore I don't think there is any physical problems.
On the Device Manager I now have the following :
1. Intel 82801AA Bus Master IDE Controller
The driver file details are : C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\VMM32.VXD (CONFIGMG.vxd)2. Primary IDE Controller (dual fifo) with a Yellow !
The driver file details are :
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\ESDI_506.PDR
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\VMM32\IOS.vxd3. Secondary IDE Controller (dual fifo)with a Yellow !
The driver file details are :
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\ESDI_506.PDR
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\VMM32\IOS.vxdAre these the correct drivers ?
Under the Performance Tabe I'm getting :
Compatibility mode paging reduces overall system performance.
Drive C is using an MS-DOS compatibility mode file system.
Drive D is using an MS-DOS compatibility mode file system.
Drive E is using an MS-DOS compatibility mode file system.
I'm also getting the NoIDE key in the registry, but when I remove here and restart my P.C. I get the following message :
Your multi-function device (Intel 82801AA Bus Master IDE Controller)has some child devices using 32-bit drivers and others using compatibility-mode drivers. This configuration is not supported,so your computer, windows will use compatibility-mode drivers for each child device attached to this multi-function device. If you want to use 32-bit drivers, you may be able to obtain an updated driver for the device that caused the problem by contacting yuor hardware manufacturer,or you can disable the device.
Then I restart my P.C. and the NoIDE key is back were it was.
Thanks DAVEINCAPS for following my problem so closely.
I don't understand what's happening, at this point any suggestion would do fine, I have to try everything.

The NOIDE is returning because it keeps detecting a problem with the IDE controllers. I would have thought the update from intel would have fixed it. I'll check to see if I can find an additional IDE driver update.
There is an ESID_506.PDR update here. The download is 243450USA8.exe. The problem it describes doesn't apply to you but you can go ahead and run the update. I put it on all my installations. I doubt the update will fix the problem but it won't hurt to try.

Additional drivers may be on the motherboard or system manufacturer's site.
You may need to enable DMA for the drives. Click on the drives in device manager, choose settings and check 'DMA'.
If you click on the controller with the yellow exclaimation mark it should give some indicatation of the problem.

The controller with the yellow wxclamation mark has the following note :
The device is either not present, not working properly or does not have all the drivers installed (Code 10).
I tried what you told me on your last reply and also re-installed again the Intel chipset again.
At least now I only have the yellow exclamation mark on the Secondary IDE Controller only, and the NoIDE key is gone and is not coming back when I restart.
If on Devise Manager, I choose to view devices by connection.
Under Primary IDE Controller (dual fifo) I have "GENERIC IDE DISK TYPE01"
Under Secondary DE Controller (dual fifo) I
have nothing.Does this mean something ?

Maybe there's a problem with the motherboard secondary IDE port or with something connected to it. You may want to try disconnecting the devices on the secondary and then see if that port still shows a problem in device manager.
Intel seems to have changed their chipset download page. I'm going to email you the chipset update I use for intel chipsets. Run it and see if it makes a difference.

Dave01 - Yes I tried various times but the problem persisted.
DAVEINCAMPS - I received your file, but unfortunately it changed nothing. I really appreciate your constant support, but at least for me it's time to give up. I will take the P.C. to the dealer I bought it from and let him fix the problem and while I'm there I will upgrade it to Windows XP.
By the way (last question) what OS would you suggest ? which one is the more stable, less bugs I mean ? especially for installing various types of software.

XP would probably be best, if your PC can work OK with it. XP comes with native support for alot of the newer hardware. Plus much of the software you find now will need XP. You didn't mention your CPU but I think XP needs at least a 266 mhz. You may want to add more memory for XP also.
If XP doesn't suit your needs it'd probably be best to stick with 98. ME has some updates that 98 didn't but it seems to have other problems.

My specifications are :
Intel Pentium III
800 Mhz
256 KB Chace
Intel 815 Chipset
128 MB SDRAM (upgradable up to 512 MB)Do you think this can support XP ?

Oh yeah, your PC can support XP as it is. You may want to increase the RAM for better performance.
