I am having BIG trouble with my son's computer. His CD drives load and are in my computer, system manager, etc. but when you try to use them, they say they are not accessible. I have pulled the cables and re-seated them; I have removed the drives from system manager and let it find them again....all to no avail. Can someone please help me. I am at my wits end. Thanks

in my repair carreer , usually the drives have gone south with that error message. its unusual for both to go, but that could be due to a power failure, or a power surge.
but,,,,,

kkk,
These drives are not hooked together. One is on the cable with the HD and the HD is fine. It was like, one day they worked and the next day they didn't. So like you said...is there anything that would cause them both to go when they aren't hooked together. Thanks

You need to determine if this is a hardware or software issue. Use a bootdisk with cdrom support to test out the cdrom. If the cdrom drive does not work then it is a hardware problem. Post back what you find out.

smithdk,
I have also tried booting from a disk and I still can't sue the drives. Hardware problem, huh?!?! Do you have some suggetions for me?
Thanks

So what error message do you see when you try to use the cdrom with the bootdisk? The computer does detect the drives on bootup right?

smithdk,
Yes, it comes up and assigned them as E: and F: but when I try to use them it gives me that error...Drive not ready; ABORT, RETRY, FAIL? (That is probably not exact verbage, but it's close!).
Thanks again

smithdk,
I have tried different CDs. The one that has been in there the most is my Windows 98se CD but it works fine in my computer. I have tried a couple of my son's games CDs also but nothing.
Thanks

It's kinda hard to believe that both drives died at the same time. But it obviously is a hardware problem if you cannot access them from Standalone Dos. It might be that you orignally had a windows problem, but in the process of troubleshooting caused a hardware problem. I suggest checking for bent pins on the drive and motherboard. Also check the power connectors for spread (loose) pins.

You could also connect the cdrom from your computer to your son's computer and see if it works.

Either that or some kind of weird cmos configuration problem. How are the ports they're connected to configured in cmos? You'd probably want LBA to be off or maybe auto. You might try toggling some of the settings there.

Thanks to everyone. I am going to try DAVEINCAPS suggestion first because I agree with Drew that it is hard to believe that they died at the same time. But I was not here when it happened. I was in Sturgis (Heck of a time for Harley chicks!!!!). They did have bad weather here that week so I am going to have to grill my son some more to see if there is something that he forgot to tell me. I will probably post back again after I have done a few things but it may not be until tomorrow. Thanks to everyone for all of the input!!
