I would start by removing and reattaching all cables to it, then if that doesn't get it, remove the listing for CDROM drive in Device Manager and reboot. How old is that drive? Is that the original Win95 load?

It might be that the drive is too old. Usually computer only last 10 years or only good for 10 years, then things start to stop functioning. Check the cable if that doesn't work uninstall it and then install it. Or you could replace it with another drive. Make sure it is the same manufacture. Some cd roms make the computer stick when it is not from the the same manufacture.

Darn, should have thrown away my still-working XT about 13 years ago...

Your config.sys file is trying to load a driver that is incompatible with the cdrom. That particular message sounds like it's coming from an older, perhaps proprietary, driver. Did you recently change your cdrom or attempt to install cdrom drivers? You might want to post back the contents of your config.sys file if you can't get it figured out.

Except for older proprietary drives, 9x won't need any added cdrom drivers. The drivers you've attempted to install are dos drivers and aren't needed for windows. That's why the cdrom works OK in spite of the message.

Run notepad and open c:\config.sys. Post back it's contents. Then open c:\autoexec.bat and post it back. We can tell you which lines to remove to stop the message.

This is the line in config.sys that's causing the error:

Device=c:\sb16\drv\sbcd.sys /D:mscd001/p:220

You can put a REM in front of it to disable it:

REM Device=c:\sb16\drv\sbcd.sys /D:mscd001/p:220

That keeps it there just in case you need it but keeps it from loading.

You can also do the same for the autoexec.bat line:

REM c:\sb16\drv\msdex.exe/d:msd001 /v /m:15

Since the driver isn't loading in config.sys the autoexec.bat line won't load either.

That was from when CD drives attached to a separate card, or on the sound card rather than directly to an IDE channel on the motherboard. How is your machine set up? Jusw follow the cable fromt he CD drive....
