CD (E:) drive not working

OS: Windows XP Professional,
CPU/Ram: Intel Pentium M, 1500GHz,
Comment:

I insert a CD into my E: drive to burn a new CD and it stays closed for ~5 seconds, then automatically opens up. The box pops up with: "Exploring - audio CD (D:)...E:\ is not accessible. The device is not ready".
Device Manager says the drive is working properly...any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

do a system restore back to before the cd-rom went fritz
