Hello every one, ive got a little problem here.

Now ive had this burner for over two years now, it is a CDRW-226 Memorex. Im running on Win 98 555 mphz PIII, 128 ram and as far as i know i have the right drivers installed.

The burner has been working fine for me and all of the sudden it just desiced it did not like me anymore and stoped working. When i burn Audio cd's the are all jumpy and scratchy and sound like crap. The funny thing is that some tracks turn out, while others dont. I looked in the drive and it is pretty dusty in there (its 2 and a half yrs old).

I know its not the software (NTI cd maker pro) or the driver because they have been working fine for me. Could the problem be the dust? Or is my cd burner just spent?

Thanks

It could definetly be the dust. Get one of those cans of spray air and blow it out. I don't know if those cans have enough force to damage the unit, but I would start out with a minumum.

Do you suggest taking out the whole unit when blowing out the dust or just leaving it in? Also is there any thing you can by that runs in the drive and cleans of the laser reader?

Thanks

Be careful if you do decide to open it, not to put pressure on the laser lens. The dirt is preventing the laser lens from focusing correctly. The lens actuallly moves up and down so it can read write the peaks and valleys. A qtip and a drop of windex (on the qtip) and apply GENTLY. Dry GENTLY with the qtip. Careful not to apply too much windex as this will go behind the lens and then you have a real problem.

Thanks

I have that same burner, Memorex 2x2x6x and it just quit on me too. I don't have the dust problem though. Maybe they only work for 2 and a half years. I got mine in the fall of 1999. Just recently it started making 5 or 6 coasters for every good cd, and now it won't even make 1 good one. I think it is time to junk this thing and get a new one.

Do you think this would be something to bring up to memorex. I know that they only have a warranty of 1 yr but maybe they got a good reason for it.

Thanks
