I have formatted the HD and completely wiped out any WIN95 from it. When trying to boot up the CDROM from a WIN98 boot disc, it will not recognize the cdrom. All it does is create a virtual drive D. How can I get it to read my WIN98 intall cd?

What brand computer you have?Is it a big name like Compaq HP or Gateway?Or just a mom and pop built? You may can try this.Go to http://www.bootdisk.com and download a 98 bootdisk. At the a prompt type.
D:\
It then should give a D prompt like this
D:\
Then type setup.exe.Should look like this
D:\setup.exeHummm 32 megs of ram. That doese meet requirements but you may want to buy more ram if your going to use this PC for games.32 may be enough but its going to run sluggish.

I have tried typing d:\setup. It says that is an invalid file. I ran a directory of the d drive, and it does not list setup. For some reason, it is not recognizing the cdrom at all. I have tried everything I can think of, and I cannot get it to recognize the cd drive. Any ideas? I have installed WIN98 several times before now.

I truly appreciate all of the responses. However, I still don't have a solution that will work. My computer will not recognize my cdrom drive at all. When booting up, it tries to find my cdrom drive, but says it cannot find a cdrom. Then it boots up making a virtual d drive (no e drive at all). I have checked the physical cable and power connections, they are correct. When the computer was running on WIN95, the cdrom was functioning. HELP !!

This sounds like an old system. The CD drive is probably a proprietary drive. Does the grey data cable go to a sound card or other small interface card? What is the make and model number of the CDROM drive?

You may have a very old CD-ROM drive that might NOT be accessible with the generic Win98 CD-ROM drivers. You will find this out while Windows 98 Startup displays the message that "CD-ROM drivers were not installed". This can also happen if you have a damaged Drive or damaged or improperly connected Cables. To distinguish between these two possibilities, during the Bootup, you may access the BIOS setup by pressing the appropriate key(s) that varies with the BIOS on the Motherboard. If the BIOS setup shows the CD-ROM drive in the correct IDE Channel with the proper Jumper position, and you still have problem accessing via Boot Disk the drive is OK but the driver is lacking.
You need to find the make and model of the Drive and hunt for the Win98 Driver from the Manufacturer and modify your Boot Disk all of which are a real pain. It is to buy a new CD-ROM drive which you can find for bargain price.
