Go to Device Manager in system in control panel and see if there are any yellow ? or ! there. These indicate hardware item not properly set up. You've got a newer machine that may need a chipset update after a new installation.

You could also check 'performance' in system in control panel and see if anything is running in msdos mode.

Hi Guys,

I have the exact same problem. I decided to upgrad my laptop to windows 2000 from win 98. I use an interdanl dvdcdrom in a usb enclosure always worked fine in '98. But had major problems trying to get it installed in win2000. SO decided to go back to win 98. Now my laptop is reading everything fine i.e the name of the dvdrowm is in device manager. It says the drivers are installed and working etc and it show up im "My computer". When i run Nero it gives me the option to use it as my dvd burner....everything looks perfecr 'till i insert a disc. It tries to run it for a couple of seconds...green light flashes and then the cdrom maje a couple of clicking noises and just stops. the ususal message "no disc in drive"

Help Help Help....i'm pulling my hair out!

thanks,

Barry

Sinced it's a fresh installation you may be lacking chipset or other windows updates necessary for successful operation.

Go to this site and download and run 274370USA8.EXE. This updates cdvsd.vxd which is one of the files windows uses for cd device access.

If that doesn't fix it (and it works OK otherwise) you may need to contact Nero or check on the support site for your laptop or external DVD.
