After installing modem with conexant chipset and reboot.I've found out that i have a program running named Carpservice which i do not have before.(I hit Ctrl+Alt+Del and see the running programs). In my startup tab in msconfig, i found out an entry in the hkey\run carpserv.exe and also in the registry under my modem, this carpserv.exe is listed. What is it all about? Is it safe to delete? do i need to delete it? Running Win98SE.

Mean,
I would uncheck it in msconfig.
Do a search for the carserv.exe. When you locate the file rename it carserv.old and restart the computer.
If everything runs ok after that then I would say it could be safely deleted.
If not go back and rename carserv.old to carserv.exe.HTH

Could not find much on this one. Looks to be a Carp Fishing site in German. However just guessing, could not dig up any executable with that name. Maybe someone else will have more luck.

I just unchecked its startup entry in startup list using regcleaner, thank you for the response, i still would like to know what this for? the exe file is in Windows\System folder.

I had no luck searching several file search sites. I would rename the file in Windows\System to carserv.old and if after a few days everything is running good I would then delete it along with any registry entries for it.
Be sure to back up the registry before making any changes though.Guess I should have asked this earlier but is there anything new under add/remove programs?

Just the Modem software/driver installed was added. It says "Generic SoftK56 Data FAX,Voice SpeakerPhone Modem".

Mean,
The program you are seeing in the add\remove is additional software for your hardware not the drivers. For Example: I have a video card and when I load the drivers from the CD it also installs some features such as a control panel for display settings ect...
I delete this as I do not use it.
You could delete Generic SoftK56 Data FAX,Voice SpeakerPhone Modem from add/remove and the drivers will still be installed, at least that has been my experience with other hardware.
If your modem doesn't work then re-install however, I have never had this be an issue with other hardware.
HTH
Good Day!
