I have installed windows 98 and after the system boots up. The system hangs and give the following error.
I hope someone can help. I just was in the middle of installing digital camera software and got this happened:
Blue screen appears and I get the messageCan't write to drive C: data may be lost Press any key to continue.
I'm having trouble getting through scandisk and into windows now. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

i would suggest to use scandisk and run a surface scan. If scandisk doesn't work it could mean either your ram is bad because scandisk runs in the ram or your hard drive header could be curupted. So if scandisk doesn't work try a third party scanner. And if that doesn't work try reformting you HDD.

Turn the computer on. Before the OS starts to load start tapping the F8 key. A boot menu should appear. Choose 'command prompt only'. At the dos prompt type:
scandisk
and enter. When it's done checking the folders and files choose to do a surface scan.

Thanks, I'll try that. But I also forgot to mention that whether in Normal or Safe mode, it says "not enough memory to use scandisk".
This machine also a few weeks back would not boot up - just beeped. So I re-seated the RAM, and it's been ok until today. So basically it has 2 problems, it gets hosed up and says it can't write to drive C (blue screen) while installing the 3rd component of software. The first 2 installed fine, it gets hosed up on the 3rd component every time (maybe software?),and also says not enough memory to run scandisk. Thanks in advance for any more input.

It could be you have bad ram as burning112 suggests. But try the scandisk in dos as I suggested and see if it completes.

you have windows 98se so your HDD partition is most likely fat32. Your header that is you File allocation Table could be currupt. If all else fails you could repartition you HDD using Fdisk and then reformat, but you will lose all info. There is another reason why this is happening you could have a wrtire protection on your hdd.
I know i am babling on and on
so need any more help just ask
