Reply: (edit)Why would you want to write anything to c:\windows? It should be left to the Operating System. Do yourself a favor BACKUP!!!

Reply: (edit)You are saying that whenever you attempt to copy a file (using Windows Explorer) to the C:\Windows folder, you receive the error message "access denied"? Just that one folder, or any destination? We've heard that a million monkeys at a million keyboards could produce the complete works of Shakespeare; now, thanks to the Internet, we know that is not true

Reply: (edit)Programs are normally installed in 'c:\program files' unless you specify a different location. If you are trying to force installs to c:\windows, I can understand why the system won't do it. You don't want to clutter up the c:\windows folder. Do yourself a favor BACKUP!!!

Reply: (edit)The details are a little.. thin - it would be helpful to know just what the circumstances are that generate the error - attempting to overwrite a Windows file that's 'in use' would be one way. Have you checked the disk for errors (Scandisk)? The MicroSoft Word problem has been lumped in, but it may not be (and probably isn't) related to the other issue. Reply: (edit)Yes, programs will install drivers, DLLs, OCXs, etc in c:\windows, but normally users should not be installing anything there. How about giving us a little more information on what you are trying to accomplish and how you are doing it. Do yourself a favor BACKUP!!!

Reply: (edit)the ms09.dll file is not missing it just where I get the typical illegal error message. Some programs I was trying to install would not due to the access denied error of the c:\windows folder. No other folder has this problem. I couldn't even install an office service pack or other programs due to the fact they copy files to the c:\windows folder.
